Product file naming conventions

I love products here as I can count on quality. This is important to me as I do use it for business.

One thing that causes me a delay is whenan artist makes a great ote,. but puts it under theri name rather that what the items actually is.

Example: "Bob' make a perfect  car like the musclecar I need for an ad. But It's under Figures/Bob rather than Vehicles/Car byBob.

I coulseasily find, and use now and in the future, the second, while the first requires me to remember who made any of the hundresds of items I have.

Please DO put your name on items so I know who to look for in the store, but please make it easier for users to FIND your products in our libraries.

Or tell me off.

Categories should usually show the item under its type. I do like having some products (e.g. hair and characters) grouped by author as in those the differences in style between different creators can mean the items won't mix and match nicely, and sometimes I do find it easier to recall the maker (Stomemason) rather than the product name..

I totally agree as there are some content creators knownfor specific"looks", but when I need a sci-fi city, there are alot of items I have to hunt through.

While I dont like PA names used in product folders, I do it too some times and I do it when I dont know where else to put it.

Yeah, the search function in content library or smart content lets me down quite often.  Especially in regards to stuff from other places (ShareCG, etc)., but a lot of Daz stuff falls through the cracks as well.

The Poser stuff especially.  I usually end up having to sort through dozens of folders trying to find things in the Poser folder, even the Daz store stuff.  When you have thousands of products, yeah unless you have a photographic memory, you aren't going to remember which PA made every item, or every item for that matter.

Another annoyance is when it shows the model but not the textures, or the textures but not the model.  This can happen when someone else does addon textures, but sometimes doesn't show both, even for the same product package.

I'm not a 'Daz store' snob, I'll use whatever wherever, as long as it looks nice.  I do keep my non-daz stuff seperated (Renderosity stuff in Rendo folder, other stuff in My Library, leaving the My Daz 3D Library soley allocated to Daz store stuff), so that I have a better idea where I got it later should I be wondering about addons, etc.

But yeah, not sure how the meta tags work in Daz, but it'd be nice if they were put to better use by content creators, even a number of those here in the Daz store.  I'm sure there's a way  to create shortcuts, meta tags and such for products myself, but that'd take me weeks to sift through all of my product trees to do that.  Plus, you still need to figure out where the thing got installed first, which, if you are using DIM, which you don't get to see.

Looking for anything from the V3/V4 era is a major chore, just sayin... I use that stuff a lot, but the search function is significantly less effective for these.

Wardrobe breakdowns are another weak point here.  Example, a jacket that doesn't appear under outerwear, but is under shirts... or under 'outfits' even though it's a separate item.

I suppose I should be happy that we even have a search function, but going forward, I do think that better shandards r.e. meta tags and such should be enforced, at least as far as new products that are added to the Daz store, for previous gen stuff as well as G8 gen stuff.  Updating older product tags would be nice too, but that's probably not going to happen as it would require Daz to assign someone specifically to do this, and PA's may not be around anymore, etc.

I spend a lot of time in 'My Daz 3D Library > People > Genesis 'X' > whichever subfolder i need' because something I needed wasn't in smart content or content library, even for Daz store stuff.  Also, Smart Content likes to lock out stuff from other generations (i.e. Genesis 3 only clothing for Genesis 3), which sometimes isn't helpful.  And if you 'deselect' your figure, well the Smart Content window doesn't have a scroll bar (at least not for my install), so it seems to cut off at some point/not everything is there' as opposed to Content Library, which can be a real hodge podge of unrelated stuff when you use the search.

In short, I agree with the OP.  When I go looking for a product, the product description is usually what I look for, not vendor name.  'T Shirt by DazGuy' in the Products folder is much more helpful to me than 'DazGuy's T shirt', as I'll be looking in the 'T' folder, not the 'D' folder if search has let me down.  And using some cutesy name for your product makes it even harder to find.  Example "Essence by DazGuy'.  Essence might be a really cute dress, a magician's robe outfit, or whatever, but it doesn't tell me anything.  And it can obscure stuff from the search function too, if you don't specifically spell out 'Dress, Robe, etc.' in some way that's easily recognized by the search function.

I get that PA's like to keep their stuff together, but there has to be a way to find a better middle ground here.  Even if it's something as simple as including a 'shortcut folder' with the product by the PA (so I don't have to make one myself) that redirects your click in Daz Studio to the folder that actually contains the product.  Example: 'T Shirt by DazGuy' folder shows up in Products under T, but shows you the 'Daz Guy's T Shirt' folder when you view it.  And a separate folder under Products also shows as 'Daz Guy T Shirt' under D which directs you to the same folder.  Sure, this would add a bunch of 'essentially duplicate folders' to the Producs category > Letters, but at least when you looked for T Shirts in the Products folder under T (if search let you down), you'd see Daz Guy's T shirt there, as well in his section under D if you were specifically looking for DazGuy's stuff.

In short, there has to be a better way that'll address this issue.

That's why I sometimes use the store's search function to find the content in my Library (I search for the product here, which have a link to the ReadMe's, and most of the ReadMe's give an indication of the folder hierarchy and where to find it). The exception being some of the really old content, which sometimes doesn't have a ReadMe listed.

I must admit that I need to open up Daz install manager with embarassing frequency to find where content is installed, heh.

I find it once, when I buy and install, then I put it in my own custom categories and I know exactly where it is.  I just redid the whole thing when I got a new laptop because I wanted to make some changes to the structure, so instead of just plugging in the external drive, I downloaded it all via DIM again and manually categorized it.  The only problem is, if you have a large library already, it can take forever. I got the laptop about 3-4 month ago and and still have about 400 items to go lol.

I manually remove all contents from vanity folders and put it in the correct folder. If I'm looking for Muscle Car 2   I want to go into vehicles and find its folder. I don't honestly care what PA made it. I stopped using Categories after DAZ contnuously has problems with them.

I also remove environments from the props folder, and take all poses and categorize them by type.

I also try to categorize shaders whether they are 3delight or iray, and the same with lights.
