My last laptop that I did many more renders on than the one I have now broke as soon as I turned it off and let it cool completely to room temperature. That caused (a) circuit(s) to break on the systemboard. That's why I render less now. I'll have to wait til I save for a midsize desktop or something with smaller lithography to do lots of renders.

Desktop or laptop? That could be a loose PC card, loose/bad RAM, or bad CPU. My new build, if I swapped out a pci card I have to pull my secondary GPU and boot it once without it, or it never goes to bios

Well, as long as it's not the HDD/SSD, you can always move the drive to an external enclosure and keep using it (via USB) and/or transfer the files onto another drive, or just move the HDD/SSD to a new system in some cases.  The OS files get a bit fussy about this, but usually the other files remain accessable.

Official diagnosis from the repair shop is MB fried..... the good news is that the hard drive is intact.. dropped it into an external enclosure and plugged into my old netbook... yep.. files are intact, will save me quite a bit of work!
