Washed out, faded clothing/ cotten
in The Commons
Does anyone have any advice for how to make clothing look washed out and faded, particularly the faded cotten look. I have had some success messing around with the Surfaces tab, but I cannot say I really know what I am doing as its been trial and error with the various dials.
Thanks!

The best approach would be to think about why say a cotton t-shirt fades. The first is that the dye itself looses intensity with age (washing, sun exposure, etc.). The other is that cotton tends to develop a fuzz of fibers on the surface over time as the threads become worn.
You could simulate the first by modifying the base color of the texture. Either by say making the color more gray or by adding a diffuse overlay of a medium to light gray color. Play with the weight of the overlay to get the color to look right. For an even more realistic look, you could add a grayscale image to the weight channel and make the amount of fading stronger in the areas where the clothing would naturally be more worn out.
The second effect could be as simple as reducing (or even removing) the glossiness settings. Worn out cotton doesn't have much, if any, specular reflection to it.
You might also try playing a top coat layer with a tileable noisy gray tone image, but that might be overkill.
Thanks! This helps. It gives me a more targeted approach. I will give this a try this weekend.
