It is good to have All of these generation available for peoples individual usage needs
For an animated sci fi filmmaker, the G3/G8 figures Present too many obstacles in my production pipeline so I remain with G2 with
some G1 for Aliens.
It all depends on the project. For comics, I use Genesis 2. It's lighter on the resources. It renders faster and I can pack more characters in the scene. For art images, that don't require too many characters or that I can run all night, I use Genesis 3. I love the sculpting options of Zev0 and Xenix101, and Skin Builder 3. Anagenesis 2 also makes G3 snap.
For my part, I'm mostly a mix of G3 and G2. I have some G8 stuff, but I haven't had the time to invest heavily in it yet and I haven't (yet) seen any areas where G8 performs better than earlier characters.
G2 is my workhorse, and I use additional G3 if I need extra characters/skin. There are some G1 characters that I use on occasion, and G8, only very, very rarely. Main reason for sitting out G8 is financial; the earlier generations work fine for my purposes. I might or might not invest in a G9 when that shows up in a year and a half.
I tend to use G3 characters most of the time. I have Wear them all for G3 Female so I can use V4 and Genesis clothes and I frequently do.
I tend to use G8 and G1. Mostly because G2 and G3 didn't appeal to me enough to "move on" from G1, who could read Poser and older DS texture files that aren't .DUF, which was less of a hassle. Plus with GenX, I could still make it work with G1.
I like G8 for the expressions. Plus, all the freebie bundles that caught me up with the times.
I mostly use G3 and G8 but also have some items where Hiro 3 is my figure of choice. I don't spin up any M4 or V4 of late although I may give a go at an M4 package I loved and only just re-discovered.
I tend to stay with Male figures but occasionally a female is required. :)
All of them. Also some V4 era stuff (people still release stuff on the Poser front for V4).
I probably favor G2 and G3 a bit more though, and have the most custom morphs for G3, with G2 a close second. I spend a fair amount of time dialing in characters for fan art pieces, etc. so a good collection of morphs is helpful.
G3, recently forced to redo my shero; so, I'm working with G8, for which I had been stockpiling morphs, characters and clothes. Still experimenting with Altern8 in order to save the Caucasian Daz Core characters.
I use Genesis 3 because it's easier to handle for my computer but I began to convert my characters to Genesis 8.
I still use the original Genesis base for all of my characters. I like the figure, and like the fact that I can apply V4, M4, K4, etc mats and textures to it. I just foind it more versatile.
...I have one G8 character (supposed to be for Steph8 but works well with the base) and am hedging on another (one of the more "stylised" ones). I do have the basic body/head morphs which I was able to get at a decent discount with a coupon but that is it as I don't expect there will be another update to Gen-X.
Why the step backwards in generation?
backwards? G8 from G3 is forwards.
I'm using mostly G3 with some G2. I've bought a few G8 figures but have not been using them yet. ^^
Still mostly on G3 for females, split between G2M and G3M for males. I haven't embraced G8 yet because cost (all thos morph packs again, every generation!) and the complication of moving my old morphs up to G8 now that GenX is sadly no longer in development due to the untimely passing of it's creator.G8 seems to offer little to me in terms of "wow, gotta have that" over G3. Same basic geometry and UV maps, new base poses and ability to more easily pose that cool facial bone rig thanks to integration with power pose. The power pose part is very appealing to me, the rest is like "why bother?"
Mainly G3, as I started shortly after G3 was introduced so I have the most stuff there. G8 is probably next since there are enough similaraties with G3. I do use some G2 as well, but not as much as I used to.
Mostly G3 followed by G1. Genesis 3 has lots of options for child characters, good racial diversity, and interesting characters like George and the centaurs. Genesis 1 is great for creating monsters as well as the great sets by Male-M3dia and others. Genesis 2 figures just didn't appeal to me, with the exception of Lee 6, and starting over with Genesis 8 is too expensive for me. I did buy Edward 8 and will buy Alexandra 8 because they fill a role that was lacking in my other figures.
G8, I really like G8 but my video card does not. So, for any scene that has alot of thought and imagination put into it, G3. G2 is fun as well but im starting to use her/him less and less. Ill always use G2 for something though.
Of course, I use mostley G8 and sometimes G3 only. Everything else is backwards. Digital stone age ;-) Why in the world would I ignore progress?
I use both G3 and G8 and both are from great quality. So they belong together ;-)
Whatever floats the boat, I say. Its like when I need a screw. I go to my parts cabinet and rummage through until I find more or less what I had in mind, and go with it. As long as it works, I use it. The content library is so humongous now I have choices of figures coming out the whatnot. Since I find the whole photorealism fad rather puzzling from anything other than a technical perspective, I can make just about any of the figures work for me. I have Vickies one through seven (no eight yet, but I have a few G8 characters), and a selection of the Michael counterparts, A bunch of Aikos and Stephanies (and male counterparts), plus a whole bunch of the Poser figures and a few third party figures. Variety is the spice of life! Literally thousands of character morphs, not including the ones I come up with myself. I'm strictly a hobbyist, so as long as I'm having fun with them, I'm really not married to any one. Do I have a favourite? Nope, not really. Some I like more than others, some simply represent a challenge.
It varies. If I'm starting from nothing and just "digitally doodling", I tend to start up with G3F as my default base for females simply because her base characters, hair and clothes all load Iray-ready. That said, I've got a lot of G2F and G8F bases that I use frequently as well, especially for younger females. For males, I mostly use the Genesis 2 base for younger guys since that generation still has the best selection of Young Male stuff, while older guys tend to be G3M, especially if they're "macho" or character types, with George for G3M being one of my favorite mixing elements ever. I wasn't really using the G8Ms that much for a long time, as I find most of the G8 bases to be more generic and less visually distinguished than the G3s, but I've started using the 8s a bit more since the Edward base came out. For weird or creature stuff I still default to orginal Genesis, and I've got a little "stock" company of pre-built Genesis background characters I use regularly for crowds since it takes only a few dial spins and swapping in one of my huge hoard of V4/M4 gen skins to change their appearance drastically.
@Cybersox - I noticed that about G8. I transfered a morph from G2-G3-G8 and from the front, she doesn't look much different which is weird because the morph is an oriental woman. From the side you can see her oriental features better. I'm thinking that if I'm going to use G8 prior to buying Facegen Artist Pro, I'm going to have to start creating skin textures manually.
Mostly G8 now, because of the realism, but I still use G2 and G3. I rarely ever use G1 and I never use Generation 4. They're just not realistic enough for me anymore. They were great when they first came out. The most realistic at that time, but G8 characters are so much more realistic. I use all the previous Genesis generations' clothing on G8 characters, and the G3 skins fit on the G8 figures perfectly, so I get a lot of variety.
...for myself it is a budget thing.
It also depends greatly upon each persons individual end usage
and workflow based definition of "progress".
if you are a one framer who only renders still portraits of single
Characters or perhaps couples.
You will be well served by using only the newest figures.
If you are an animated sci-fi filmaker who needs multiple diverse
Characters, even different species, in your animated stories
Well sorry Mate, but the latest sexy chick or handsome pretty boy
"pro" bundle just wont be sufficient for the narratives you may be seeking to put forth.
Additionally as a practical matter, the G3/8 figures are only really useful
in animation for those of us who have the means to acquire
external pro animation software that will import and characterize G3/G8
figures for motion creation such as Autodesk Maya ,Motionbuilder or Reallusion Iclone Pro.
Lovely ,Bloody good for us.
Not so good good for those who only have Daz studio as their primary Character animation program which I would guess is the majority of
users here.
Yes I am aware of the G3/G8 Specific canned aniblocks for aniMate 2 in the store .
But again the quantity& variety is extremely limited compared to
the Motion Data compatible with the previous generations.
...even for those of us who don't animate but have a major investment in the older Genesis lines and also have spent a good amount of time creating and refining custom characters, the "latest and greatest" is not always the best solution. Having to start from square one each time a new iteration of Genesis is released gets old after a while, and expensive.
Amen!!!!
