Which Genesis do most people use?
in The Commons
I'm using G2 mostly because I can use Facegen Artist with them. When I can find full time work, one of the first things I intend to buy is Facegen Artist Pro so that I can start working with G8, then I plan an unashamed impulse spend on Daz commercial products. However, I am learning 3D modelling, mostly for my own work but I would also like to give something to the community that is useful. I feel sure that most people use G8 but I could be wrong. Which do you use mostly?

I know for a fact that a lot of people are still using Generation 4 guys, but it looks like most people these days are somewhere between Genesis 3 and 8, with more G3 stuff. Personally, I am switching to G8 from G3.
Do you know if G2 or G8 clothes can be adapted for Generation 4? I know G8 clothes can be adapted for G3 and I have done it quite successfully with a Wilmap jacket. I need to be able to work with the free content I have at the moment.
I'm using Genesis 3 most, since I've spent most of my money on Gnesis 3 assets.
I do mostly men and monsters and use G1 mostly because of the large number of morphs and morph sets for them. Once in a while I'll use G2, because of the better detail. I'll use G2 for the Minotaur. I only rarely use G3. But my primary guys are still M4 and Freak4 despite the lack of surface detail. They just bulk up better!
You know if I have a specific need, like making a character transform into a werewolf say for Genesis, I sometimes will create 3 different versions of my characters ranging from G1 - G8 even. If the morph won't work in the later figures I just pop back to the G1 or whichever base it supports for the panel before (I'm doing 3d comics mostly) then establish the earlier base looking more or less like the modern base version, then use rapterians or whatever ever older character package I need. I guess I consider them all tools in a tool box. G2 certainly creates the best likeness using FaceGen I have found.
Oops! Would I be right in thinking Generation 4 is G1 or G2? I think I remember reading about this now.
My thinking at the moment is I should focus more on G2 but I am also thinking it might be possible to make every item available for Genesis (which autofits nicely to G2) and G8 (which is adaptable to G3) I don't think it should be too difficult to accomplish.
No, Generation 4 was before Genesis 1. G1 is Generation 5.
I've gravitated to G8, but sometimes G3 because I have a bunch of stuff, and then earlier stuff if I want specific geografts. Geografts demand very specific figures, so if I really need 'snakebody woman' then, welp, I'm using the Succubus add-ons on G2F.
Thank you for clearing that up. I got a little confused!
How do you fit Genesis and G2 clothes to G8? Is there a tutorial for this?
I thought I was sticking to G3 ..have a lot of morphing, shaping, skin stuff for it...but then realized I have a ton of G8 stuff. toss a coin really.
I actually use them all although the one I use the least is Genesis. Except for monsters, I use a lot of Genesis monsters. I LOVE v4 but tend to move her up to G8 mostly because of the better bends and expressions. G2 is great for a the more slightly unrealistic look and then G3 G8 I have a ton of stuff for.
I like gen 8. Every time I use older stuff it looks...older to me. So I use gen 8 male mostly.
...G3, as like some others here I have a number of shaping, morph and skin merchant resource utilities and I am now on an extremely tight budget. I do use Genesis "Classic" from time to time for aliens, toons, and such but also can import those shapes to G2 or G3 via Generation-X.
It depends on which engine I want to use, and which figure will require less fussing to get setup in that engine.
If I'm going with 3delight, I'll go with Genesis 2 or 1.
If I'm going with iray, I'll go with Genesis 3 (I've got stuff for Genesis 8, but most of that was bought with an eye towards converting to Genesis 3, though I do have the base morphs.)
I started last July, so G8 / V7/M7 for me. I have some sale G1 and 2 clothes I bot early on, how do I convert stuff upstream? When I try putting older clothes on new people I always get this.
I favor G3F the most atm followed by G2F.
i use em all. and miki3
Same here. I like Miki's shape, even if it does not pose well by today's standards.
Overall. though, I use G3 the most, right now, while G8 is starting to catch up.
As long as it doesn't kill me to get the basics for each new figure, then I have no problem spending a little to be able to use the latest and greatest. I have all the basics for G8 and have been using that generation the most, but I also have a good G3 setup as well as a G2 and G1 setup. Since I can use G3 skins on all genesis generations, I have no issues using whatever genesis figure I need for a project. As for V4 and M4, I stopped using those figure after G2 was released as they really started showing their age when compared to the newer figures and with GenX I really didn't need to use those base figures any longer since I had those clones in G1, G2 and G3.
You either have to learn how to use autofit to the best of its capabilities and be ready to fix busted geometry and weightmapping or for G3 stuff use one of the tutorials for converting those (hand conversion is better than autofit by a long shot for those and about as fast).
Genesis 8 mostly. But I also use Genesis 3 and 2 on occasion and even Genesis 1 for a monster at times.

G3 mostly, but adding more G8.
I've been dragging my feet on moving beyond G1, because I have a character library of close to 100 characters built to G1 (mostly using GenXed morphs ported from gen3 and gen4, and using gen4 skins.)
I had begun to adopt a couple of G2 figures when G3 came along and broke everything.
Now I've got a project which is using distinctly Tooned versions of characters, and G3 has a lot of Toons, and G8 is starting out early with heavily stylized characters as well, so I'm beginning to slowly update things. Or at least build a new library of more Toony versions of my existing characters.
Right now they are more G3 than G8, but eventually I'll manage to move things like Morpheus and Mythcons's freebie cariacture morphs up to G8 (and over to the females as well. Toons seem to be just as bad as anime figures for having only one gender available).
Because the aim in my art is to get as close to realism as I can get, I go with whatever version has the most advancement toward that (we still have a ways to go before getting to real realism, but it's fun to see how close we can get). Because of the advancement in G8's facial rigging and the progress to muscle follow in the bends, I use that version almost exclusively (though I do use a lot of the G3 skins - as many of them are really great!). If G9 ends up being closer to realism then I'll make the jump to that - but that's just because of the aim of my art to try and get as close to realism as possible.
Those who don't have that aim are a bit more free to pick whichever gen they prefer the looks of the most and just go with that. But after using PowerPose with the awesome facial rigging of Genesis 8, I really can't go back to using the older figures. It just gives so much in the way of added realism, creating more realistic expressions and asymmetry.
Yeah; I like older shapes and such, but when I start bending and posing older figures I start seeing the problems.
I use G8 the most and soon as I move my G3 toons to G8 I will use them exclusively. I try to avoid mixing different generations together when it involves human characters because of the rigging and shader changes mostly. For animals, given their scarcity and the scarcity of my budget, I use what animals I have available no matter the generation.
Genesis 3. It's in HD and everything for it is Iray-compatible.
Don't know if creators can retroactively update earlier products for dForce compatibility, but that's just about the only thing it is lacking.
Ditto - I have almost the full set of Zev0 add-ons for G3 and I can't afford to buy the same things over and over, so it is G3 for me for the foreseeable future. I do have one G8 character - Grandmother - but even she could benefit from some Zev0 magic but, alas, I only have the G3 versions.
