She's actually the first person I thought of. LOL With a little work she could be a Mary Wickes too.

YES, I thought that too! I was hoping for a Wicked Witch of the West outfit. (Although probably easy to kitbash if you have a lot of content.) Now we just need a melt morph!

  • Its quite interesting how Daz is pitching this character. Even the 20% banner makes the pitch for using her mixed with other characters.

"Not only is she a very unique character in the Genesis 8 family, but so many of our render artists have found that mixing her unique elements and 'imperfections' in with some of their other, favorite characters brings a level of realism to them that has proven truly impressive."

I don't think I've seen them do this before. Its a smart strategy. Though Edie alone can be toony, she doesn't have to be. She offers flexibility and options, and that is what many people look for in 3D. Showing this with 23 promos will no doubt increase sales as people who might not think much of her alone can still see the value of adding her "DNA" to their runtime.

Another thing I noticed is how many add on items there are today. I count 20 add on items for Edie. Victoria 8 didn't get that many! On one hand, that's pretty cool and they can all be part of the intro discount. But on the other hand that might overwhelm some who can't afford to buy them all. At least the offer stands for a week or two so customers have a chance to take advantage of it.

Also, including HD on this character is great. That needs to become a thing with more DOs. Personally, I believe "HD" is going to have to become standard practice some day and open to all users for import/export. It can't remain walled off forever. But that's another topic.

I want to venture a guess and suggest that Daz was surprised/inspired by all the people posting stuff with Ollie 8 mixes, and decided to use that as a selling point for those who would otherwise turn their nose up at something that doesn't look like a hyper ideal Victoria's Secret model.

Its actually a pretty genius marketing tactic, I must say.

Also, would it be possible to see a render of Edie mixed with Monique, please? Asking for a friend, hehe.

I guess I feel weird about Edie. It seems strange to me that the first truly older female base is sort of a caricature and portrayed as an object of humor. I doubt it’s intended to be intentionally awkward but it seems a bit... uncomfortable to me.

she comes with the usual fantasy fairy stuff that is popularity lots of Daz users but I think I’ll pass.

Alexandra was the 1st clearly intentionally older female.

I'm sure Edie as a caricature of an older person is intended to showcase a life of good humour and story telling, not to ridicule old people. I remember the 1st book I was read from and learned to read from was an old Mother Goose Fairy Tale book with just these style of illustrations. We loved that book.  Besides, myself having grandmothers and grandfathers & other kin that look surprising like these caricatures I'm not sure what to think when people say there is something insulting and Ollie & Edie based on their looks.

This is the best pro bundle since the Girl 6 Pro Bundle and easily outdoes it. For me, this is the best ro bundle DAZ has made. I will definately be buying this Pro Bundle but unfortunately must wait and maybe by then I won't get the free Kaleia and one other Pro Bundle. crying

  • Edie looks fantastic!  It's great to see something that isn't a supermodel or a cutsey fae.  She and Ollie look so useful and really fill a need for a lot of people, I bet.

I do love seeing how she mixes with the other named figures to add a touch of less perfection and more real person.

Anyone else run into problem with Woodland Spirit Outfit (part of Edie Pro bunble) not installing?  I have tried to download and install several times via DIM, but it keeps saying Install Failed.

I just want to clarify something. When I made Edie (and Ollie) I was working from a very specific place of admiration towards artists I enjoyed in my younger years, like Jim Henson, Brian Froud, and many others of their time, who make faeries and otherwise charicatured works of more elder looking otherworldly people. There wasn't an intent to create a realistic "ugly old person".

As far as I can remember, Serene Night and myself have been the only ones to suggest that Edie might have shown old ladies in a more attractive light, so we're hardly in the majority and I hope it hasn't negatively coloured your view of the way Edie has been received. I used a lot of words, but I don't remember any of them being 'ugly'. I do see something special in her, and although I'd be unlikely to use her straight from the box I think she'd mix brilliantly with other figures and impart something unique to them. If I'd have thought she was lacking in any way then I probably wouldn't even have mentioned it unless I thought it would save others from some kind of purchasing mistake, but having failed to see that Ollie was worth more until I'd seen what others had done with him and he was no longer on sale, I think that not buying Edie could well prove to be a non-purchasing mistake :)

You may not have intended to create a realistic older person, but I think you've made such a stellar job of your charicature that you've gone above and beyond and ended up with a versatile character that will go a long way towards helping the rest of us create realistic older persons. Ugly, though? Not so much :) I expect to buy Edie later, and Ollie will be mine too at some point in the future.

Thanks very much to DAZ 3D, you, and others involved in making these great caricatures.

Those of you who purchased the Edie 8 Pro Bundle without getting the extra discount for owning previous Name 8 Pro bundles should now have store credit for the missed discounts.

Yes, of this generation. Although I only started collecting a lot of the DAZ characters since Mar 2016.

Oh, I forgot about Ivan but no females seemed intentionally older that I can remember. LOL, unless you consider looking like Barbara Eden does in her seventies as average.

You did an excellent job with them. I don't think either one is ugly. There's something about both of their styles that fit how I picture most characters in Terry Pratchett's Discworld books. Edie also immediately made me think of Mary Wickes, who has always been one of my favorite actresses.

right away I saw the deal about using the character as add for younger characters ...
It would be great to have older clothing styles, and a lot of older skin packages.

This deal does have much needed older skins. Are there any skin rtexture packages based on older skins? for G8? or even G3.
not so much characters, but just the skins. or the ability to create older looking skin.

G3 had Opal by Saiyaness, but that's a complete character. Very good tho. I used her quite a few times :). You can't go wrong with any Saiyaness character. They're all good ;).

    Laurie

yep..i do have her. I purchase quite a few older characters actually. what I've notice on many, most newer ones excluded form this comment, the head and neck look old, the rest of the bodyt like a supermodel. Hair...hair changes a lot when older..thinning, the colors is more faded or white/gray ... unless using hairdye.

Clothing -- my 80 year old grandma not wearing catsuit or lingerie all that much. I like the peasant dress included in the bundle. Mother Goose as well smiley

I think it is great that people see the possibilities of using Edie to help with characters similar to Mary Wickes and Margaret Hamilton.  Both actresses were discussed prominently in the character actor thread.

    https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/234451/character-actors-who-are-your-favorites-and-what-do-they-look-like/p1

Thank you Daz.  I hope the future includes additional products with interesting features that can be adapted for other character actors.

I took a peek at the Daz store during my lunch break at work today and saw Edie.  Only had time for a quick glance, but I haven't been this excited to get home for quite a while - of course today was the day that I had to stay an extra hour at work.  Downloading now.  This looks like one of the best bundles I've seen in a long time - a companion to Ollie and just like Ollie, a great character to mix with others to get a much more unique look.  I'm really looking forward to trying out this wonderful new character.

You nailed that for me, those are exactly the visuals that popped in my head when I first saw her and her promo renders.

Congrats and thanks for these two absolutely wonderful and so versatile characters! They both add so much realism to any custom DAZ character.

They are designed for illustrations. Not pinups, not photorealism, *illustrations*.

Thank you! What I do is illustrations. I don't *want* them to look like photographs, but not necessarily dialed all the way to flat-out 'Toons. Edie and Ollie are *perfect* for my purposes.

And kudos for the PAs who did the bundle outfits. Every one of them attractive, with decent coverage and *no wandering holes*. Thank you. All of you.

Also having issues with Woodland Spirit outfit.  I installed it through DS and can load the meshes, but the textures seem to be a problem.  This is how it loads, and if I try to use the materials it comes with, it stays this way.  Hope this helps resolve some issues with it.  Really like this outfit :)

Definately one of the best characters/bundles I've seen at Daz for YEARS. I've been here a long, long time and I can honestly say this is is my favorite EVER.

I got up last night not feeling well and came out to surf for a bit. The squeeeeeeeeee! I let out when I saw Edie had arrived literally woke up the dog. I already have Ollie and love, love, love him and was waiting anxiously for his female counterpart to arrive. It was like Christmas morning!

For those who want to use these two to make Pratchett art, I'll second and third that. Edie makes a perfect Granny, Nanny, Magrat, and just about any other female from that world. Ollie is the same for the males. I see many happy hours of playing with both of them to finally get to create my own versions of Pratchett's characters.

MallenLane...if you're listening... you knocked it WAY WAY out of the park with these. And with all the additional extras for the Pro Bundle and the add-ons from other artists, I couldn't fill my cart fast enough. You guys rocked it...many many thumbs up (don't worry...I'll just dial in as many as I need!)

    THANK YOU!

Ok, time for some sleep. I hope you guys post some renders! :)

Once I purchased her, I downloaded Edie and HD add on first and then left DIM to slowly work through the long list. I popped some hair and clothing from my runtime on her and rendered her using Pro Studio HDR. I didn't spend any real time on setting her up because ... well, I couldn't wait, lol. I'll try harder next time, I promise :-)

I mixed Edie with Charlotte and reduced the size of hands and feet and nose. I like her a lot. Some of the lipstick is awfully garish, though. The bright pink I used in the full length render was replaced with a darker toned down selection in the closeup. I needed the Scene Optimizer to render her in GPU.
