OT: Microsoft is watching us
We keep hearing about how Windows 10 snoops on what we do but I was surprised when I started Chrome on my Win 10 laptop and a popup box appeared saying Edge is more secure. When I installed Win 10 I said no to all of the questions that involved sending any information to Microsoft, that obviously doesn't stop a bit of local snooping by the OS.
Maybe I'm old fashioned but I expect applications to just wait until I run them, not look over my shoulder and chip in with "helpful" suggestions whenever they feel like it. What's next? Popup messages in Studio saying I think you should move that light a few feet to the left? Please, please can we have Linux versions of Studio, Bryce and Carrara so we can leaqve this evil empire behind.

And you're sure that MS created the popup in Chrome? Sounds like a typical fake security popup you'd get in most browsers.
Nohing like that on my Win 10 Pro, I think it's a Win 10 Home "feature".
Edge ads appear with Firefox too.
Nah this is a real thing: https://www.davescomputers.com/microsoft-telling-windows-10-users-edge-safer-chrome-firefox/
LOL, that's funny they do that, although it's actually true, it's usually not successful to make such claims because people like the status their browser choice gives them. I have Windows 10 Pro so I guess that's why they don't do that to me?
Great! Between the government, Jesus , facebook and now MS watching me, I may actually need to get those curtains the neighbors keep petitiong i get.
Hang tough! Eventually they'll pay you to put curtains in, like my neighbors did.
Free curtains, yay! (But vacuuming them is a pain.)
...I've got heavy vertical blinds.
...yeah had I gone ahead with the free offer, I'd have W10 home (as at the time I had W7 Home) and thus minimal control over what's on my system (for example disabling Cortana [which is not only a "nag" feature but also collects data on searches] is a much more involved process on Home Edition than it is on Pro which includes hacking the registry).
...I think the next time I create an espionage expert character for the RPG I'm involved with I'll name her Cortana.
I don't know whether it makes any difference but I only use a local account in Windows 10 - never use my Microsoft account. I was not able to use the Microsoft Store at first but that seems to have been fixed now as I just tested with a free app.
I have Windows 8 and use only a local account. I couldn't give less of a crap what's in the Microsoft store. LOL. In fact, I disable every app that I'm able to.
Laurie
LOL, that's also the first time I've looked at the store in about 2 years so it isn't something I'd miss at all.
Even if you "disable" Cortana but it keeps on running in background and spying what you are doing. Only Win 10 Entreprise or Education can really turn off Cortana.
They knew from day one we'd need curtains, that's why they called it Windows. Microsoft has always watched us.
'It looks like you're writing a letter...' :)
I use a local account as well. I've got an account with the American audible.com store, I started before they had a British one. With the online Microssoft account I couldn't get it to authorise the DRM, it kept redirecting to the British site whatever I did. With a local account I can get this to work, although I do have to set my region and date formats to USA. I hate it when computers insist on being "helpful" whether you want it or not.
Yeah, I'm not too worried about being watch. I mean Santa was watching, then God... Like once you get use to the idea Jesus is with you in the bathroom even, then well who cares if my life helps educate a few young up and coming AIs? I'm not doing anything really interesting so if they look too hard they'll be bored to tears. Punishment enough.
Google collects your data all day long. You use their browser so they collect even more. Microsoft is showing you one popup. Conclusion: Microsoft is watching you? Sorry but the irony is strong here.
I remember something about one suggesting AI's monitor chats to keep them from becoming too toxic. But I figure if they make the AI's do that, it won't take them long to figure out how to hijack some nukes when they decide earth would be much nicer without us all.
*sigh* I really wish people wouldn't think like this. Big Brother doesn't really care about your welfare ;).
I use Google without logging into it. I only log in where I have to, give as little info as possible. Yeah, I'm paranoid, but that doesn't mean someone isn't out to get me. LOL

Tin foil hats are available on the "did you forget" shelf by the checkout.
We hear stories of A.I. taking over the world but I have noticed a rather sinister trend recently, AIs have taken up telephone scamming. I've had a few calls where an obviously synthesized voice has told me my Internet connection has been compromised and will be canceled unless I press 1 to connect to a technician to fix the problem.
But if you don't make your own tin foil hat, how to you know there isn't a radio relay micro-etched into the foil? Come to think of it, how do we know they aren't micro-etching radio relays into all kitchen foil in case it gets made into hats....
Google still collects data when you are logged out. Its not on your profile, but they still do it. You can see this by using YouTube. You still get customized recommendations based on what you watch on YouTube even when logged out.
I'm saddened that people have forgotten that our savior Ceiling Cat is also watching over us.
I find it funny people completely ignore Goggle's pervasive data collection of their activities but get upset that MS does occacional advertising of their apps and services and bug collection activities on the Windows 10 platform.
Troubling though ceiling cat may be, we at least can summize that ceiling cat either wants to pounce on you for play for pounce on you for food. What do these OTHER watchers want from us? The lyric should have been: "I've got a feeling some sort of something is watching me."
This has always amazed me, too. But Google lets us find cat gifs. So Google gets a pass.
Already have one ;).
I've never like ANY of it frankly. And I really don't like that people are so blasé about their privacy. I think they should be concerned. But, that's just me. Of course, you can't even stub a toe nowdays without someone listening or watching, whether it's in your car, your house or out on the street. The fact that I'm not doing anything wrong is completely beside the point. The point is they don't NEED to now what I'm doing. And by they I mean any company, individual or (gasp) government.
:)
Laurie
It's pretty simple. If I use a free service I expect the company to take data I deliberately gave them by entering it into the service.
If I buy a program, I expect it not to send a whiff of data to the company unless it explicitly asks me first.
I was looking at google maps. Arial view of satelite images. Zoomed in on my home. How's that for being watched? Imagine someone lying out on their patio in the buff thinking a high fence is enough. LOL.
Acording to Wikipedia, "most of the high-resolution imagery of cities is photos taken from aircraft flying at 800 to 1,500 feet." So that plane was not just simply flying over you.
Of course they are.
You thought the W10 upgrade was free?
So is Sting & The Police
