Here is an interesting talk about the future version of 3Delight that will be shipped with Foundry's Katana 3.0.

I wonder if the DAZ Studio version of 3Delight will ever get upgraded to this future one.

  • Can't say for sure, but even if it doesn't, I'm sure you can export to rib and use that in the stand-alone version which most likely will.

Thanks for sharing the link! Very interesting!

...so effectively we are using the "Frankenstein" version here, still REYES but with some ray tracing.

Oh how nice that would be to have more simplified parameters.

As to using a new standalone (hopefully still free), that would still need the Daz to RIB transfer and it would remain to be seen how many CPU cores one can use in it before shelling out a lot of zlotys.

...another thought came across this morning.  Considering that Daz seems to be pumping Iray over 3DL (most new products coming out are Iray only) I am wondering if they would even be inclined to adopt the new version of 3DL.

From the presentation it looks like the shaders, render settings, and lights would be totally incompatible with the existing implementation of 3DL in DAZ Studio so the developer work effort would probably be like adding a 3rd render engine to DAZ Studio.

Man that guy just yammered away and then finally showed off something.  Should have worn a mic that was fitted to him with all this turning here and there.... bad presentation.  I liked the info when we finally got to see it though.

    ...part of my point.

While the new version employs MDL shaders which are more compatible with Iray it would pretty much be incompatible with older content that is based on RSL shaders, unless a new set of basic 3DL"Uber" shader presets (similar to the Iray ones) were also included.  Not sure of how much a headache that would be for development.

They are a diffrent standard, OSL not MDL. Renderman also uses OSL now.

Considering he only mentions Katana, it doesn't seem likely Daz would get it.

Has the Daz 3DL plugin even updated at all since Iray came along?

No major updates as far as I know, last one was after DS4.7, when 3DL suddenly rendered darker images, though a little fasterfrown

I think we've had a new version, yes.

    4.9.0.2  Update to 3delight 12.0.27

  • Yep, we got the raytracer speed improvements I think in 4.9.0.2, and some other tweaks.

..but isn't OSL more compatible with PBR (and vice versa)?
