Shadow without projection screen?

Wow, I accidentally came upon this tiny small screenshot and it makes me wonder if it might be really possible to create a (png) shadow image without any plane or object. This would be very useful!

    That does work in iray renders as long as DRAW GROUND is set to on (Dome set OFF)  and the image is saved as a png
