I avoid giving likes for the "soft porn" it is so over done here I just pass the bikini and boobs on by. Animals are good and country themes and kids are generally worthy of my like. Sci-fi and fantasy I can really appreciate if the rendering is mind blowing. I can appreciate a good render. I also like something that is funny.
Call me prudish. I wish that this site would have a seperate gallery for the 'soft porn" because scrolling through pages of it to see things a little more appealing is distracting.

I am just the opposite, would love to see more exotic images and less postworked ones. I feel this gallery is rather tame for my tastes. As for likes,I give likes and comments if the image moves or impresses me in some way. I have seen great images in all kinds of genres.
...I rarely peruse the galleries here (or for that fact post to them) as it is too much like browsing the entirety of DA, Just too much stuff to sift through unless you know specific artists.
I miss the old gallery format we had which showcased the best work in the community on a monthly basis. Yeah one didn't always get a submission accepted which while disappointing, I feel also helped people to push their skills and technique.
..and the dangling of a carrot (voucher) was a good incentive (which could be done today with a GC).
My two Zloty's on it.
Dinosaurs.
I look for animals, superheros, fantasy stuff and anything with really good lighting.
...you definitely wouldn't like DA even with the MA filter turned on.
I only am there because I used to post scans of my hand drawn sketches and my photomanips there in teh years beforre I got into 3D as well as have a place to link to for showing off related illustrations on one of the RPG forums. They disabled direct posting of images as several members abused the feature.
I like the galleries as they are. I’m interested in images that tell stories and typically include props and other kinds of details. I don’t care for images that look out of the box or are just close ups of faces. I note many of the top images seem to be of characters staring into the camera and I find portraits of that sort visually uninteresting.
Sexy female characters in skimpy clothing are pretty commonplace here and on deviant and I pretty much ignore it. It’s not my thing...but without it I’m sure 3d would not exist. To each his own.
Pretty much anything that catches my eye... it's hard to note a specific type or genre that will elicit a like, it's more the quality of the render. It could be an action scene, a pin-up, or whatever.
I don't post in the gallery often, but I am one of those who do those portraits, so people with the app can see a character with different lighting as they decide whether to purchase or not. I dont have time for scenes. That said, what earns a like is if the render is well done, and I only see those linked from the product pages. I don't "Like" exaggerated sexy or gory renders.
Even with the soft porn, Daz galleries are still cleaner than some other sites. I too, bypass the sexy stuff and am looking more for great lighting, composition, story, colors, etc.
Every few days, especially when I have an image to post myself, I scan a few pages of images as time allows. I'll open in a new tab anything that catches my eye. Usually I'll give it a like if the artist already caught my eye, but many times no. Content per se doesn't make me give a like or withhold one, so pretty ladies or dinosaurs or country kids might get my like. If I really think something is good I'll post a comment, usually use a "wow" or something.
I also do look for artists I know. There are a handful that I know their styles, and will like if its a good image.
I tend to not give "likes" to images of females. That said, if I find an image visually stunning, (which usually means a combination of story-telling, composition, lighting, and meaningful postwork,) I'll give it a like regardless of the gender. But there are so many images of females, (especially the overly sexualized images, scantily clad and/or suggestive,) that I tend to skip over them and go for the renders featuring the men, animals, environments, and so on; Essentially the sort of images that make up too small a percentage of the gallery.
I tend toward images using men also, but sometimes an image of a female is so well done that I'll like and/or comment on it. Not crazy about the oversexualized ones either, but whatever trips one's trigger ;).
I especially am drawn to scifi images or period images, like Edwardian or Victorian periods (those are few and far between tho, mostly because there's just not much clothing for those time periods...lol).

I like un-sexy nudity. Now thats a hard find
Two things I don't like are a) cute and b) heavily photoshopped. I'm just not a "cute" type of person. As for "heavily photoshopped"... I was raised in the "less is more" school. What I'd really like to see, though, is the original render together with the grand photoshopped masterpiece. That would be interesting.
As for the softcore, I think I fall into that category. I figure, if the ladies can fight all sorts of aliens and monsters in skimpy armour and stilettos, it's only fair that men get to run around dressed similarly. However, my boys are lazy and prefer to leave the fighting to the ladies.
I skip random headshots. They don't really demonstrate a mastery of scene building.
Three things.
1) An image that makes me ask 'how?' as in how did they achieve a certain look or effect. If it's too easy to figure out, I'm not really impressed enough to hit the heart.
2) An image so Clever, I am entertained or at least enjoy the creativity or idea or concept behind the image.
3) It's someone I "know" from the forum. Auto-likes for me pals.
See, I really like images that are photoshopped. I tend to prefer them since they tend to display a lot of creativity.
Speaking of creativity, Fantasy and surrealism catches my eye. They are my faves when I browse the galleries. I give likes from time to time and some comments too...
I'm a pretty hard person to please, both with my own art and that of others. I guess I mostly like those which show either a good mastery of the programs used, those which have an interesting theme, or those which are just so gosh-darned cute you can't help but smile when you look at it. My favoutites on DeviantArt pretty much demonstrate this, as it's quite a small list compared to some, and I've been on the site for a good number of years now.
I don't dismiss them altogether. Wonder Woman, currently in second place is fantastic.
That makes sense.
Oh never mind...
This is a very good question and it did make me think about why I pick certain images to comment on or like.
Poser and Daz Studio are excellent, easy ways to get into 3D graphics. The side effect of this is that a lot of images produced in these programs have a look of plastic skin, or a very dull, matt-finish skin because the software takes time to master, particularly in the area of lighting. If people are happy creating those types of images and if they are enjoying their art then good luck to them and I hope that they continue to enjoy making their images. I think that like most people here, I tend not to comment at all on an image if my comment would be negative - people can post in the Art Studio forum if they want constructive criticism.
I tend to "like" or comment on images that either: A) Have a "realism" look to them. B) Have been rendered or postworked to look like cartoons or anime. C) Have something new about them - this could be something funny or something presented in a way that I haven't seen before. Sometimes there are images that just jump out from the crowd at the gallery. It's really hard to define why, but you can tell that a lot of skill has gone into that image. I generally make the effort to comment or like these images too.
I do wish people would use the tags correctly. There is nothing more annoying than trying to browse for images tagged "Environement" and finding T&A stuff
Indeed whichever category you click on whne first entering the gallery you will get what I call T&A and others refer to as "soft porn"
The shot has to tell a story, or suggest a developed concept. A complex scene that took time to put together I'll apreciate the hard work that went into it. I also like when the expression is just right to convey the emotion.
I think people don’t use tags because they aren’t easy to use or setup and some features depending on the device aren’t readily accessible. I also think the tags are kind of broad. The store software doesn’t allow for say gallery management on my iPad either.
I deleted my gallery and rarely visit the general galleries. When I do visit the gallery, I am ready to hit like. There are several factors that affect my use of the like button, but most of them boil down to whether the artist had a goal and acheived it. Here is my view of some of the topics raised above.
RE: "soft porn" - my use of like depends on answer to...does it tell a story? does it combine elements that I would not be likely to think of? does it have a sense of humor? does it harken back to some vintage or classic advertizing or calendar pinup? does it convey adventure and excitement? could it be a cover for an old Harlequin Romance book? if the answer to any of these is yes, a like is more probable
RE: postwork - generally don't care but it depends on what the image is going for. if I think that the image is intended to highlight a sale character, prop, or set, then postwork creates doubt that I could use the item in same way. otherwise, presence or absence of postwork is unimportant to me. the exception is if I have some reason to believe that the artist is trying to demonstrate something with (or without) postwork. if so, and if the artist is successful in demonstrating whatever it is with or without postwork, then the presence or absence of postwork does affect my decision to like.
RE: do I know the artist - this really just puts the work in context. I am more likely to think that I know the artists' goals if I have visited their threads, read their posts in specialized forums, etc. For example, if I have read the artist's posts discussing animation, then seeing a render without postwork matters because I know the artist is experimenting with a workflow to minimize the need for postworking each frame in an animation. I might view the image differently without that context.
EDIT: RE: photorealism vs not. my personal tastes are for stylized fantasy art, ancient murals, modern cartoons, and other non-photorealistic images. however, if I know that the artist is striving to mimic a photograph generated in a photographer's studio and the artist gets a good result, then I am more likely to give a like - even though I don't really like it. this topic just reinforces my general view that context matters.
I might start a gallery again. Might not. But if I do, at least some of the images would be what some here consider soft porn, such as homages to classic book covers and advertising pinups. Some of my images would have postwork, and some would not. I would hope that people who have interacted with me would have more context on my goals, and would be more likely to visit my gallery, and therefore more likely to like than random visitors to the Daz3D galleries.
I appreciate that. It's always nice to have more samples when your looking at buying something.
I try to keep an open mind about the gallery. I don't base my likes on any particular subject matter or style. I will like something that is undeniably impressive, but most likes are for something that I would want to go back and look at again.
My beef is not that they don't use tags, it is that when they do use them they use them incorrectly, thus making the whole tag system useless. If Daz had restricted the use of tags to just one category or at most 2 for each image then the sytem would work. They would have to use an either/or rather than clicking every tag for every image.
Edited to add:- Take this image for example. I found this by using the Environement Category.

Can you see how many tags, and tag sub sections have been added
I will copy and paste, in case you can't

Had the tag system been used correctly then this would have been labelled as

I tend to like good toon render more than other renders.
I like get natural or man-made enviroments.
I like good male or female or animal renders that look eye catching in some way but as it typical most somehow be unique I don't know how to get such a designation a 'genre' or 'type' to describe it because I don't know until I see it.
I give likes for good renders more straight out of DAZ Studio much more often than for excessively postworked images.
Ignore or don't like:
I don't give likes for violent images usually as there are too many of them, they look mostly the same, and so on.
I typically don't like fantasy horror images. It's also overrepresented and they look all same-same.
Likewise, because of the overwhelming number of portraiture style, pinup style or not, of females, I don't spend time looking at them because they all run together as a sort of vague mostly Genesis look. That's not to say they aren't quality but it's like picking out a leaf on a fall tree and say, "wow, this one is best".
