Gift Cards - How do they Work?

OK, the title pretty much asks the question, but I have to get details to clarify what I wish to know.
Basically, I want to buy a gift card for myself and then use it to buy store credit. The gift card would be invalid after one year, according to the promo page. If I purchase Store Credit with it, am I correct in assuming that there is no expiration on that other than when it is all used up?
The reason I wish to do this is because I have a limited amount of funds for purchasing content and other store items, and to make sure it is available for when I wish to use it for a DAZ purchase, I would like to have it in Store Credit form to ensure I cannot spend it elsewhere.
Thanks in advance for any information you can provide for me.

Store credit lasts forever (until you spend it!) as you thought - it's just unclaimed Gift Cards that expire.
I've been using GC's for nearly eight years - one reason is (like you) to limit spending to a budget (good luck with that though). The other reason is for people like me (outside the US) currency conversion can be so variable that I like to buy a GC when the exchange rate for me is high. The only exception to this is when DAZ has a good sale on GCs which outweighs currency conversion losses - look out for these, I've seen them up to 20% at times (some people report even better when there has been a store glitch)
Many Thanks MelanieL and barbult. You have both provided excellent information, including need to know items I was not expecting. I most definitely appreciate it all.
