I Ray!!

As I get deeper into this IRay thing I realize just how little I know. And when I go to the Surfaces tabs I am completely lost. Is there a comprehensive tutorial on the subject? Well maybe a comprehensive "IRay for Idiots" would be more to this user at any rate. Lots of $1.98 piecemeal helps for sale here (for a good deal more that $1.98) and I can't afford to go that route. Ideas?

It also helps to open the preview window and play with the settings to see what they actually do on the fly

Be aware that a lot of the information created shortly after Iray was introduced is either outdated or wrong. That was a time when everyone was new to Iray and there were a lot of assumptions and limited experimentation going on.

As for shaders there is this one, though a bit pricey:

That doesn't always work with how the preview disables certain things. But it can help with basic stuff.

Plus Iray made some changes from 4.8 to 4.9 to 4.10, so some specific advice may no longer apply even if it was correct in 2015. The "dual lobe specularity" is new to 4.10.

That would be the "outdated" part.

Not sure what you mean. What I see in the iray preview mode is very close to what I see in the actual render. I am not talking the texture preview mode if that is what you meant.
