Why is it that when I have an object parented to a clothing item, it dissapears (gets deleted) when I fit that piece of clothing to a figure?

Disappears from where - does it not appear in its previous position in the viewport or is it also gone from the Scene pane list?
I think the item is moving its position based off of the new position? Also, I dont think that items like to move with clothing. Parent to the figure instead. So, say that you want to attach a piece of jewlry to a wristband or something. Fit the wristband to the figure, then parent the piece of jewelry to the arm of the figure. Position to make it look like its attached to the wrist band.
They don't move, they get deleted.
I have a figure with a robotic arm. The forearm has a cover that is parented to the robot arm. Under the cover is a sword also parented to the robot arm.
Originally when I made this character, when I fit the robot arm to G2, everything was fine.
Now when I fit the arm to G8 and select G2 as the "who the clothing was made for", it fits fine to G8 but all parented props get deleted. So it seems my only option is to reload the G2 character and get the props off there and re-parent them to the G8 figure and try to line them up again :(
*edit*
I've never seen this happen before

It's the same figure as in this scene in my gallery

And it also happened when I did the same thing with the winged suits in my other image (the wings are parented to the chest of the suit) They always worked fine before but the last time I messed with them was before the dforce upgrade
It looks like, behind the scenes, Autofit probably creates a new scene object and deletes the original, taking everything parented to the original with it. I don't see any obvious way around this other than what you've already come up with.
I was afraid of that.
I never lined up the widget with the props so translations and rotations are really difficult :(
Actually, this raises a question I have. Whenever I parent a prop or hair to a Genesis 2,3,8 character, the prop shoots into space after parenting. Sometimes I can use the parameters and reset them to get the prop back to Earth, but this poses a problem if I had moved the prop around in order to get it into location in the first place. It is highly agitating. It even does it I lock every single parameter before parenting. The instant I parent it shoots hundreds or even thousands of units into the sky somewhere. What is the deal with that?
I have also seen this happen when autofitting. And I have seen what the user is talking about in this thread. I autofitted the Wild Nettle Necklace to Genesis 3 and 2, and the leaf on it just disappeared. Expanding everything in the scene tab did not reveal this piece, it was nowhere to be found. The necklace band parented in place, but the leaf went poof.
It kind of defeats the purpose of parenting or autofitting when this happens.
For the first one, if you want to keep the object where it is, make sure that "Parent in Place" is selected. Otherwise, it'll move from location x,y,z in the global coordinate system to location x,y,z in the parent object's coordinate system.
I haven't been able to test this, but there's one thing you might try:
Load one copy of the arm. Fit it to G8.
Load a second copy of the arm without fitting it to anything. Reparent the attachments from the old arm to the corresponding bones on the fitted arm, with "Parent in Place" turned off. This ought to put them in very close to the right place.
