I seem to be missing dforce

My Daz Studio is up to date I believe (no new updates in DIM) and I was setting up a character and wanted to use dforce to layer the clothing.

Yet when I go to either edit->object->geometry or edit->figure->geometry with the clothing items, there is no add dforce option

    No you find it at a different place. Not at my pc. But under view you need to open a tab and in that tab you find the dforce settings. I think its simulation settings.

    Yeah, I found the simulation settings but when I tried to use it, it told me there was no dforce modifier on the item and I needed to add one. When I looked up how to add one, it told me to go to edit->object->geometry->add dforce something-or-other

    You need to install the dForce package. dForce Starter Essentials.

    Then bring up the Simulation Settings Tab. Right click on the header of this and you will have the option of adding dForce to an item of clothing.

    dForce Starter Essentials is just content, it isn't needed to use dForce in general. You are right about the, or at least am, location for the add dForce Modifer command.

    Hopefully I can figure this dforce thing out fairly easily (I learn and remember things easier by trial and error)

    I have a G8 character with the more than human cyber spine and 1 arm. Then I want to put the surfs up tank overtop that and finally the M4 leather jacket over those.

    Hopefully so. Is there something special I need to do to make an item a collision item? (I set some stuff as dforce static surfaces but that doesn't seem to do anything.)

    I think anything that is visible counts as a collision item.... I generally turn off everything I don't actively want collisions for (like hair and stuff).

    No - DForce materials will collide with anything that is visible in the scene.  Hide anything you dont want it to interact with.  From my observation, hiding complex meshes in the scene (especially hair) greatly speeds up the simulation.

    Also note that if you are layering items, you will want to set the collision layer to different values, outer layer higher (I think, I have not played with layering much)

    Another option, if you don't want to keep hiding and unhiding stuff, is to select all objects you do not want involved in the simulation, then in parameters section select all again, and then set "Visible in Simulation" to false. This way you can run the simulation whenever you want without worrying about having to turn everything invisible again.
