Iray Weirdness with haircaps

Does anybody else ever encounter a thing where in an Iray scene a hair cap is sharply visible, and (less often) the eyes are black and the skin textures are a bit off? I've had it happen occasionally and sort of fumbled my way through fixing it and always assumed it was the prop. Today I'm doing something with three characters in a scene and three different hairs I've used fine before, three different skins, three different eyes, all screwed up. And before I start trying to dig into _why_, I want to know if other people sometimes encounter this.

It seems to be a forum topic every six months or so. I have not ever had the problem and haven't ever seen a specific fix. Some folks have fixed their issue via revised lighting while others have fixed the issues via skin shders/materials. A reasonable number of problems have been solved by users paying attnerion to the tips in the product's Iray materials folder. Those products typically have in icon that says something like "Click before applying shaders"

Yeah. These aren't OOT hairs. I've tried scene-only and dome-only lighting and completely changed the HDRI a few times. At this point I'm wondering if my scene file is buggy.

    In case you were curious:

As I said, I've normally worked around it, but having it show up on multiple characters at once, using props and characters I've previously used successfully has caused me to question my whole understanding of the problem.

As a comparison, I used Aisling and Danny Hair here without issues. Well.. you can't see her eyes very well, but the hairline is clean and as expected.

Oh my god, a very belated thank you SO MUCH. I was on the verge of tears of despair and now I'm tearing up through gratitude, having dug this thread up for a whole new different scene. Moving everything to 0,0 fixed it!

Yes had to stop using one of my favorite hairs because the skullcap cast a shadow in Iray under certain lighting. I could not remove it at all and would have to do two renders to get rid of it.  I’ve had it happen twice now and both were men’s hairstyles. I don’t think they are quite as transparent as they are supposed to be.

One thing to check would be the Cutout Opacity in Image Editor, and verify that Gamma is set to 1. If it's set to 0 (which seems to happen at random times in various surfaces), then that can throw off transparency.

Since DAZ Studio 4.10.x they have been more problems with haircaps I've noticed. The problem goes away for me usually if I delete a hair that causes it & re-add the hair. However, it often comes back if I do something as simple as change the diffuse color on the hair portion of the Surfaces.

You're welcome! So glad it resolved the problem for you! smiley
