Hair Skullcap Line

Hello Everyone,

I'm using "Ryan Hair" for Genesis 3, but I keep getting this annoying effect. Anybody know what it is / how to fix it?

Thank you!

There is a base shader called  "Apply Me First"; that should solve your problem.

Hm. Nope, I definitely did that first. Could it be because I'm using a LIE to replace the eyebrows?

I would probably deinstall and reinstal the product again.  L.I.E. only affects  your figure; what is happening is that the base transparencies aren't being set.  Did you install via Connect, DIM, or manually?

Entirely by DIM. I'll try to reinstall.

See if you can find the transparency map which should begin with oot...

Very odd. Reinstall did nothing. Still have the same problem.

Just to be clear... I apply the hair, then "apply me first," then any color I want. Correct?

Is there a way to set teh transparency map manually?

EDIT: Where is the transparency map located? In the product folder for the hair all I see is a Materials folder which doesn't have a transparency map.

That is a tricky question; it depends on how you installed the product... in Connect, it is hidden in a nested folder in the cloud directory in the data folder, Dim probably puts the script in the script folder and the textures in the e outoftouvh texture folder...so how did you install?  search your computer for 01OOTRyanCap.jpg to find the directory.

My Library/Runtime/Textures/outoftouch/!hair/OOTHairblending2/Ryan/OOTUtilityRyanCapT.jpg would be my guess.  Apply it to the opacity node if it isn't already there.  Also, check out any refraction, glossy, translucency, and top coat values.  They should all have maps applied that block those effects on areas of the skullcap which shouldn't have color.  If you screencap your shader settings, we could probably figure it out.  I don't have the hair, so I can't reproduce it on my own.

Thanks, guys. I'll check these avenues and get back to you. I really appreciate the help.

Oddly, this is also happening with the "Classic Side Part Hair."

This is really weird. The transparency map is already in the "Cutout Opacity."

Here's the shader settings. Thank you again for your help!

Certain lighting set-ups (particularly rim lights) seem to cause issues with transparency maps in Iray. It also sometimes happens when the character is placed a distance from world center (another Iray glitch). The other possibility is that the cap and skin are somehow interfering with one another, and adjusting the fit might help. As it’s happening with more than one hair, I’d suggest ruling out the first two issues (lighting and character placement) first.

Try turning the SSS weight, translucency weight, and top coat weight to 0 for just the skull cap.  I can't honestly see a reason you'd need any of the above for a skullcap.  If that fails, try turning the glossy layered weight to 0 also.  Any lighting issues should be negated by those issues.  I'm not sure what "cap color mix weight" does (a hairblending thing, maybe?) but that might also be a candidate for turning off as well.

If it's happening with other hair, check the skin settings on your character.  It wouldn't happen to have an ambient value, would it?  That could also cause those artifacts.

Hm. Character is close to world center and I'm using the Iray "Outdoor Presets" product. I tried using a good ol' HDR and the problem is less pronounced but still visible.

In some lighting setups the scalp cap is visible. I don’t have this trouble with Ryan hair but had this issue with other hair setups. There isn’t a fix as far as I can tell except use different lighting ora different hair.

Hmmm. I found I can use the Canvas feature to create a kind of false transparency. Not ideal, but at least it works. Wish I knew what was going on. The standard iray environment should work with all hairs.
