Manual Download Newbie Question

Fae3DFae3D Posts: 2,845

Ok, so for as long as I've been a Daz customer, I have always used the DIM to download everything.  At the very beginning I tried to download some freebies from other sites, but that hardly ever worked and I just gave it up.

Now I would like to try downloading from other sites, or even freebies listed here, but I'm sure I'm doing this wrong.  I match up the folders (runtime, textures, props, etc.), try to memorize where I put it and it's exact name, find it in Daz under the My Daz 3D Library, and if by some good luck it is where it is supposed to be, I open it and save it as a Scene Preset so I can find it again later.

Is there someway to make these things show up in my usual Products folder?  And often I end up with a folder with nothing to click on, even though I know it had things in it.  Is there a tutorial for this somewhere that makes sense to someone who has no idea what they are doing?

Thanks in advance!

If the freebie is a newer one that has duf files, it can go into the same folders, but if it's a Poser file, it might have to go under runtime.  I don't have dazon this computer, and I'm out of town, but I manually download everything.  However I have three separate libraries, the old Poser library, the My Library for Genesis era stuff (.daz files) and the My Daz 3D library for the iray and duf files.  I get the empty folders too when something can't be read, at least I assume so, and I have to move it.  I do not know if there is a tutorial although there certainly needs to be.   I kind of grew up with it before DIM (which I actually hate because I like to put things where I like them, and not where someone else thinks they should go).   Hopefully someone else can shed some light.  Definitely needs a tutorial somewhere.

    There's a bunch of videos on YouTube:https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=install+daz+content+manually+

    None are perfect.

Personally I don't use the DS default libraries for third party content but prefer one for odd freebies and one for each shop.

I have never used, or will use DIM, so everything is installed manually. The biggest problem with manual installs is that many of users don't use the proper format or paths for their files, so many times you are left guessing where to put them.

As mentioned earlier, keep free products out of your official DAZ product files. Create a new product folder, one for DAZ formats and one for Poser formats and link to them in the content library inside DAZ, will save a ton of grief if something gets fubared.

Here's a tutorial II made a while ago for DS 4.8... the only thing that has changed in-between is the arrival of the Connect folder, which you can ignore for manual install, anyway.

Thanks, everyone, I'll check those tutorials out and see if I can make these things work! ^_^

Ok, so I tried to download Lynne's free rabbit, http://www.lynescreations.com/lynesfree4.htm but I can't figure out how to open it.  It had me place it in Libraries and Geometries, as have several other items by different people.  But when I go to my Daz program, and look under My Daz 3D Library, neither of those show up as folders.  Am I doing something wrong?

  • Ok, this is a very old Poser product. When it has you put everything in the Runtime folder, you should find it in your My Daz 3D Library>Poser Formats>My Daz 3D Library.

Characters will be listed under Figures.

Make sure you have added the folder where you placed the freebie under as a "Base Directory" of Poser Formats inside the Content Library tab.

I uploaded a quick video to YouTube that shows how I install freebies.

It's unlisted so if you want to ask questions there won't be any of the usual "helpfull" YT types around.

I use Q-Dir for shuffling stuff around but two open explorer windows work the same..

Edit: Not that it's a great video or method but it is a visual example and maybe start point for discussion.

You're doing it right — the folders "Libraries" and "Geometries" aren't supposed to show in the Content pane. The first because what you see in the Poser Formats section of the Content pane are the contents of the "Libraries" folder, the second because none of the files in there should be directly selectable (they're all linked from the actual content files in the Libraries/Figures or Libraries/Props folders).

It's a bit of an inherited mess, Im afraid; the layout of these folders comes from the original Poser setup, since DAZ|Studio was originally designed to understand and use Poser content.

Thanks so much everybody, it's working now!  Plus I found several other downloads in there that I didn't know what happened to.

There's a lot to learn, but it's worth it - there are so many nice freebies out there!
