Hair Items in Fastgrab

There are 3 G2F Hair items in FastGrab.  Does anyone have them and how do they look in Iray?  They look very plastic with 3DL but if they look good in Iray, I am interested in buying them.  Thanks for any help.

I don't have any of them, sorry. I do find that with older hair, if you apply a good shader to it, they can almost always be tweaked to come out looking decent.

Keep in mind the store has a 30 day return policy too, so if you end up not liking them, you can always return them. :)

I own Nancy Hair from the same PAs that were made around the same time as the V4 version of Ilsa Hair, and my impression was that the transparency maps did not play well with the UHT2 hair shaders; they tended to look very rigid and stylized, as in the promo art you see on Ilsa Hair and Bridgette Hair in Fastgrab. Testing it just now with OOT IrayPair shaders (from Rendo), the transmaps are a bit more convincing just because the OOT shaders lend themselves better to a glossy, heavily styled (in the hair salon sense) look.

This could be less of an issue for Bridgette Hair, if I am reading the promo images correctly, because it looks like there's individually modelled strands.

Depends a lot on what textures/shaders you use. Just applying Iray uber base on the included textures does usually not look fabulous but with OOT or UHT2 textures you can often get pretty good results. Here's Ilsa Hair with OOT (brown) and UHT2 (black) textures.

If you're good at messing with the textures, you don't need UHT. (I find I have to tweak UHT to get it to work how I want, but YMMV.) Just convert with Uber shader, throw on some Metallicity and/or Reflectivity, and you get a lot of life out of older hair. Basically, I use Metallicity and Glossy weight to breathe life into flat textures.

Here's a quick render of Mishka Hair... this is like the 2 second version. Slapped onto a G3F model (Parented, not Autofit, of course). Played with Scale and Y, Z axis to make it fit. Converted with Uber Shader. Applied the reflectivity or bump (up to you) to the Metallicity dial and made sure it was in the Glossy dial. Moved the Metallicity dial (I think it says 0.44, but I did it at random mostly) and Glossy dial (0.73, I guess I could have left it).

Here's Bridgette with OOT and UHT2 textures, got a file missing error (transmap I think) when loading the original textures, don't know if this affects the OOT and UHT2 textures.

It looks a bit blocky, might try converting it to SubD and turning the res up a tad as well as smoothing. :)

  • Thank you everyone for the input.  Seeing them makes up my mind.  I will pass.

Mishka OOT and UHT2. Increased Cutout Opacity to 1.5 to reduce transparency.

I just spent a few minutes working with both, and I personally think Bridgette isn't bad. The texture I used wanted to load a transmap from Mishka (!?!) but once I got past that, it loaded textures. Same issue with Mishka, asking for a transmap from Lisa, but it didn't load the textures. I ended up setting displacement SubD to 3; converting to SubD and setting High Resolution to 2, and got a decent look for Bridgette. (Didn't help much with Mishka.) I also applied the OOT base to both. Again, Bridgette turned out reasonably nice, where as Miska... Not so much. (Image is last test, with IrayPair Hair and High Resolution.)

Also worth noting, you have to locate these in the Content Library. Neither one showed up in Smart Content. (That might be important to some folks reading this thread.)

I'm also getting errors with Bridgette, saying these are missing:

    runtime/textures/aben/bridgetteg2/ahb_bridgettehair_tr2.jpg
    runtime/textures/aben/bridgetteg2/ahb_mishkascalp_b.jpg

but otherwise no errors with the others

You did a good job!  Bridgette hair is much better.

I think the Ilsa hair doesn't look too bad. :)

Yea, I think that's the best one too, at least with these textures/shaders.

Just realized I also have an Iray texture set from Sveva (Rendo), they look pretty good to, with the right hairs. Again Ilsa:

Wow, you did a good job with Ilsa.  I might have to reconsider that one smiley

Actually the original promo, probably done in Poser, looks really good!  (I totally forgot I had any of these hairs and I have them all, probably from ages ago at RDNA...)

I came across some renders from Poser 11 recently, was surprised how good they were, the quality was easily on par with Iray. Just wonder how long the render time is. I actually have Poser 11 but haven't had it installed yet, maybe I should give it a try.
