Some do it from scratch in Blender, some use apps that have specific scripted functions for it like Vue d'Esprit, others use plugins for 3D apps that can do it.
There are ways to replicate and place multiple instances within a set. As an illustration, see examples of woodland products offered by Howie Farkes.

Carrara can do this natively. Studio can do instances but relies on plugins for control. Howie has products for each program.
Also check out Bryce.
ivygen seems popular among DAZ PA's
they swap out leaf maps etc but I recognise it's basic geometry in many sets

http://ngplant.org/ and http://graphics.uni-konstanz.de/~luft/ivy_generator/ are so cool.
What other cool app's are there ?
Thanks
XFrog. PlantFactory.
Blender also has tree and ivy generators. And there are tutorials to create custom vegetation.

There is also Arboro.

There are a couple assets for Houdini as well:

Do be aware if you are planning on selling or giving away as freebies trees or plants you make that the license for some tools may prohibit you from doing so (Speedtree) or place limits on how you can do so (Plant Factory).
ngPlant is the absolute best of the lot. You can get high end looking results once you understand the application. Very smart and efficent meshes. Nearly perfect for a free solution. Plant Factory is simply out of the question for most users. No doubt the models look great, but you can make models just as good with ngpLant, albient with much more effort since you'd have to build up the mesh and material libraries on your own but it can be done. All you need is the Ivy Generator app to build vines as needed and you're off to the races! All the best!
Wow there's a lot plants software .
I hadn't thought it threw but need software that I can give a way or sell what I make with it.I take it we can do what ever we want with open source software ,correct me if I'm wrong.
I didn't see flowers with are links.
Any good preferably cheap, free ,open source software for flowers ? with a cool licensing.
Thanks n Thanks for all the cool links
That's another great thing about ngPlant in that you can sell the trees you make. Speedtree not so much.
