I had a neighbor Dropped by my Apartment on some other business As I was working on some VFX for an orbital weapons missile shot in After Effects

. He is a "casual" computer user . and asked what I was doing. During my "lay persons" explaination of 3D animated film making and post production I mentioned my constant need for more Data storage space.

He said "I might have something to help" He left and promptly returned with a like new condition FIVE TERABYTE EXTERNAL USB DRIVE from Seagate. explaining " some guy" told him he would need it because he is into movies and music.

My neighbor is more of a streaming to his large screen smart phone/tablet type of guy...never stores anything.. pure content consumer.

SOoooo.. anyway backing up my entire 500gb win7 machine with plenty of room to spare, as I write this post on my older Mac.

Remember guys... be kind to your neighbors.

    Hehe...worked out for you :).

I bought an 8tb external awhile back...mostly because I like to back things up more than one place ;).

LOL, great story! i have 2 1 TB externals I use for backups and when I built this current rig, I went ahead and got 2, 2 TB drives installed also. It's amazing how quickly they fill up.

Congrats. I have seen those on Amazon too. I was very surprised. My DAZ content has a long ways to go to get that big although the products are getting bigger & bigger. I do want to get a 4TB or larger though as back to my computer.

Never heard of an 8TB one yet!

Of course my content has stopped growing these days except
what I model myself so I should be good for a while.

I have a number of 2 TB and 4 TB usb externals, on a laptop and two Win 7 towers. I currently do weekly backups to alternating devices for two copies. I'm about to get a couple more drives to store off-site. The 2 TB drives are for system image backups primarily - Win 7 tosses it's cookies if you try do use anything larger than 3 TB due to the way it builds the image.I continue to be fascinated by the 'bigger, faster, cheaper' improvements in disk drives over the years - I spent a few years supporting a Burroughs medium system with 100 MB(!) of disk space (1972-78) when that was a massive amount of disk, in more ways than one. As in 4 feet tall, 4 feet deep, and 20 feet long, with 42 inch platters (vertical), 4 to the drive motor.

And yeah, the biggest single directory I have is my Daz library . . .

They just keep getting bigger and bigger and cheaper and cheaper.  I bought a couple of 5TBs for $119. last year and now the 8TB models are going for $159 US.  I hope that pricing rolls up to the sandalone RAIDs soon, as there are a couple of 24 TB that I wouln't mind picking up. :)   That said, my new favorite toys are the pocket sized 4TB models, which now sell for less than a hundred bucks.  I broke down and bought two of them a few weeks ago, one red and one blue, with matching waterproof cases.

it'd be nice to have 2 4tb ssd's mirrored off of each other and external 4tb ssd to backup too. And to be on a bus fast enough to stream into  video card ram and back out to SSD storage for rendering/aimation and games.

?  They've had those, as well as 6TBs and 8TBs, for a good while now.

I found it was much cheaper to buy two 4TB externals than an 8GB so added another two to my assortment of drives I have about the place, most only get plugged in when needed as my PC seems to drop externals if too many and often chooses to drop my Dlink to my wifi or worse my keyboard if I plug too much in.

Best Buy just had the 8T on sale a few weeks ago, (I like the WD) and they're $300 and were $160.

I have five 2 TB externals mostly Seagate lots of spare room, and two 1 TB WD's all chockers..  Another thing I have heard people doing with these externals, is shucking them to get at the drive for their servers, strange as it sounds it seems that it is sometimes cheaper to by externals than proper internal drives.. The other thing is that with WD externals in most cases the drives that they use in them are Western Digital Red Drives..

You can also get external SSD's as well though their lifespan would not be as good as HDD's maybe faster but that is down to the USB connection speed..

Are you using external AC powered USB hubs??
if not, I strongly reccommend them.
I have one 4 slot hub for each computer.
