OT: Cyber Monday Crazy

I can't believe you guys made me do this...

I have a main desktop with a Ryzen 7 1700 plus two GPU's; one GTX 1080ti and a GTX 1070, and my system RAM is 64GB. And I have two other desktops, one HP that's too old to even use, and the other a Dell XPS 8900 with an i7 6700 CPU and 16GB of RAM, with a totally useless GT 730 GPU. And all I use the Dell for is to store all my files from my main desktop as a backup (new stuff gets synchronized every night). But otherwise I never even use it. It just sits there. Occasionally I fire up TeamViewer and access it over the network, but not really to do anything useful, just to make sure it's matching my main desktop.

But it's Cyber Monday, and for some reason I got it in my head that I need to buy something. And I seem to think I deserve a Christmas present. And the Dell is in this tiny case that can't fit anything, and the GPU is useless, and I really like SSD's.

So I went on Newegg and bought a new mid tower case, a GTX 1060, and a Samsung EVO 500GB SSD. Total cost with tax and shipping was $501. And I never even use that computer.

What's wrong with me? I'm usually a rational guy. But I went nuts. And I even paid a few extra bucks to get it on Wednesday. Geez.

Nothing! Now maybe you will use that computer. I have two desktops; one I remote into to do long-term render jobs that I don't want holding up my main workstation. It really allows a lot more flexibility.

Hmmm, sounds like you have a craving for some first person shooter action where you kill tons of people and blow lots of things up.....oh, wait, that's me, my bad.blush

I think you're right. Probably I'll end up getting a new motherboard with more than one good PCI slot, and maybe putting the 1080ti in it with the 1060 so it can do rendering, while my main computer has the 1070. Or something like that.

Thanks. Now that will help me to convince myself it was a smart move. smiley

That GTX 1060 will play perty much anything with maxed out settings at 1080p, and most things with mid to high settings in 4k.

Wow, Newegg is on its toes today. Maybe an hour after I ordered it there's already a FedEx tracking number.

By the way, I doubt if I really saved any money on all of this. From what I've seen from most of the Black Friday and Cyber Monday "deals", as someone here already mentioned, the big deals are on stuff that's either old or junk or both. And a bunch more are where they mark stuff up and then give a big "discount", but you're still paying almost the same as before.

Does it have an adequate power supply? See, I went on this long and expensive adventure, started out the same as you. My idea was buy a new case, and graphics card. Dell PSU couldn't power it, so OK, buy a new PSU. When I got the PSU, it turned out my dell used some weirdo non-standard PSU hookup to the motherboard, so I ended up having to also buy a new mobo, and new RAM, because it didn't take the old type of RAM....

Yeah, should be no problem. It has a 450 watt, and I doubt I can even get to 350 with the new GPU. Heck, even with my 1070 and 1080ti I can't even reach 450 with my main desktop. And I'm just moving the motherboard to the new case, so it should be no problem. We'll see....

Mine was labelled a 450 and couldn't run it, but also it was a 660 and is probably way less efficient though. Also possibly was just a bummer PSU and bad luck lol. After that I decided to never ever ever again buy a prebuilt, been building/upgrading my own builds since I practically had to build that whole thing anyways. It was a lot easier than I thought it would be.

Oh, actually, I remember what the dell PSU issue was! It was a prebuilt, and it didn't come with any extra plugs coming out of it, just the plug for the mobo, hard drive and dvd drive. That's why I had to get a new PSU that started my long battle lol.

Okay, well TheKD was right smiley

    But for a different reason....

I received my shipment from Newegg today, a new Fractal mid-tower, a GTX 1060, and a Samsung EVO 850 500GB SSD, all so I could upgrade the backup computer (i7-1700 w/ 16GB) that I never use.

So I said to myself, nah, I'll wait for the weekend to start on it. But of course I couldn't resist, so I start small by plugging the GTX 1060 into it, and surprisingly it loaded up like nothing. So I grabbed some drivers off the NVIDIA site and started to install, but it said "Hold on, we're installing drivers. Cool your jets". Wow. Ok, fine, I wait a bit, then install them, and everything works fine.

So I figured what the heck, it won't take long to move the motherboard and power supply over. So I move the power supply, then the motherboard, and then start plugging in wires to the MB. And wouldn't you know, the motherboard power cable from the power supply was a few millimeters too short. Unbelieveable.

So now I have to order a new power supply. But honestly I had been thinking about it, and while I don't need more than 450watts, I wanted to get a new black modular one to look nice in the nice case.

So I guess I'll order tonight and finish up this weekend. And I decided to install W10 on the blank SSD, rather than cloning. Yeah, I'll need to re-install everything, but that's a lot quicker than it seems. Just go thru my Downloads folder and double click on each. And I'll convert the old HDD (which held everything) to a non-system disk with data and stuff.

So next time listen to TheKD  smiley

  • Power supply extention cables are cheap on Amazon (and elsewhere).

Yeah, but I think there's a law or something that if you buy a nice case with a glass side panel you must get a nice looking power supply. I don't want to get arrested or anything. smiley

And it was only like $65 for a 650watt gold power supply.

You sure you are not a hardcare gamer???

I am a gamer also and have a full tower with a glass side and refused to add any bling to it, LOL

  • Paint is cheap on Amazon. wink

Okay I need some tech advice....

I moved my motherboard over to my new case, still waiting for my new power supply to show up, and I started figuring out how to plug the case front panel connectors onto the motherboard. And of course the Dell motherboard has no documents describing how to connect to the motherboard header for the power switch and HDD lights, etc., so I had to do a ton of research. And it turns out I even need to cut apart the connector from the old case and use it because it has some special jumper connections. Geez.

And I also realized there's only one 3-pin fan header on the motherboard, and the new case comes with 2 x 120mm front fans, and I'll probably get another 120mm rear fan. So I suppose I need a splitter to connect the MB header to two of the fans, and a molex connector to connect the third directly to the power supply? But that's bad cuz that fan will run at full speed, while the other two will be controlled via the motherboard. I saw you can get like a monster header to connect 10 fans or something to the power supply, and also with a controller, but that's overkill.

Any ideas? This is one reason I hate upgrading a PC, and prefer just replacing the whole thing.
