Render Crashes

Lately I've been having a problem with making renders in 3Delight; mainly that the whole program crashes whenever I try to make one. It doesn't seem to matter much how complex (or simple) the scene is or how low I set the resolution or what I do with the lights. Scenes i used to render with ease won't render anymore either, so it's not just new ones i have trouble with. Is anyone else having this problem?

  • Are there any errors in the log file (Help>Troubleshooting>View Log)? Do you get a Daz crash dialogue or just the OS dialogue, if that? Does it seem to eb just DS that is crashing or does it have an effect on the whole system?

No, it just simply dies without any warning or any error messages; just as if I had turned it off normally. The crash doesn't affect anything else running at the time. I can restart DAZ easily enough, and it works fine as long as i don't try to render anything. I have found it will do very simple scenes, but nowhere near as much it routinely does. Other RAM-intensive things such as videogames also seem unaffected, so as far as i can tell it's not a memory problem either.

Have you made any changes to your system (or DAZ Studio for that matter) prior to the problem occurring?

About the only thing that comes to mind is changing the Content Directory Manager to read the 3D Library in the public documents file from an external drive rather than the C Drive because the C drive was critically running out of space. This was the last line found in the Poser Formats there.

Here's a screenshot of that if that helps any.

  • If you close DS is the temp folder - C:\Users\YOU\AppData\Roaming\Daz 3d\Studio4\Temp by default - empty?

No. it has four sub-folders and quite a bit of stuff in it which (judging by many of the names) looks like it matches the last render I've been trying to make all day yesterday. Is that bad? It sounds like ti is.

Here's an attachment showing what I see.

Update: All of the individual objects have disappeared by themselves except for one. For some reason i can't delete it because it says DAZ is running - even though it isn't.

Perhaps a restart of my computer will solve the problem?

  • Check Task Manager to be certain that DS really is closed, if you haven't, but then try a restart.

Oh, I was certain all right. Did a restart anyway. Didn't help. If anything, it's worse. Crashes just trying to bring that scene up now, and though it stays with other scenes (not sure for how long; I haven't had time to test that yet (nor see the point in doing so yet) it crashes the moment I try a render! :-(

I even loaded all my files to a different part of the drive. same result. And i still can't get rid of that last temp file, which i'll bet has a lot to do with the problem.

  • Well, it turns out that I was able to clear that file after the restart. Didn't help any though. :-/

  • OK, I was hoping that a stuck temp file was the root of the issue but since that has been elminated I don't know what to suggest. Please try opening a Technical Support ticket, assuming no one else comes in with a bright idea.

Did so last night. Thank you for trying, anyway.

I finally figured out a workaround around the problem. I belatedly remembered that I backed up the entire DAZ set on multiple backup external drives. So i tried starting the program using one of them, and Voila! problem solved. i finally managed to redner what I was trying to. It's a cover page for a story I am writing about a group of middle-school boys who suddenly find themselves on another planet.
