Weird Iray issue

Hey all, got a couple questions regarding weird random Iray issues I've encountered that I just cannot seem to fix. First, I am trying to do a render of my Trek ship USS CONDOR in Spacedock, with one of it's shuttlecraft approaching. The shuttlecraft model was designed to either be the Galileo shuttle from TOS, with the regestries and name part of the geometry, or can use custoimized versions of both as part of the textures. No issues in 3delight renders, but in Iray the Galileo name and registries are still visible even when I COMPLETELY hide them in the surfaces tab, regardless whether they are using the base 3delight shader or Iray shaders. The second issue is much more random. I occasionally will see shadows of some of the hidden parts of the various models kitbashed together to make the CONDOR. they tend to be most prominent around the neck and forward secondary hull, but I don't normally see them... Only under certain lighting conditions or if the ship is inside Spacedock. Anybody got ANY ideas on fixing this crap?

Check the surfaces tab for the parts that are still rendering even when opacity is 0 to see if the refraction has a value reduce it to 0 if it does.

It has a value of 1.00, but when I try to set it to 0 it resets automatically to 1.00.

Try locking it, that should prevent it resetting.

Ok....Just tried locking it, and still auto resets to 1.00. I dunno what to do now.

  • Can you select the offending parts in the scene-list and try hiding them from there?

... that auto-reset does sound strange, though. surprise

  • If you are turning refraction index to 0, don't. It should be 1. If you are turning refraction strength to 0 and it is resetting, that is very weird. Regardless, refraction should not be doing anything on transparent objects. Cutout opacity should remove the effect entirely. I and a bunch of other people have been experiencing problems with glitched haircaps causing weird lines on the forehead where they should be invisible; I wonder if these are related.

Also, sometimes setting cutout opacity to 0 has odd effects. Try a very small value (0.0001) instead.

    They are material zones.

It won't go to 0. It always resets to 1.00 if I try. With the shuttlecraft, when it renders out the areas I'm hiding appear as if the opacity is at full, even though it's zero. The shadows on the hidden parts on the Condor perplex me even more, as they only appear under certain lighting. I used to have an issue with the M4 beard doing what you describe with hairpieces.

    I'll try it.
