Probably, if you rename the 4.8 Beta folder. But 4.10 might require changes to the database, as it runs on PostGRSQL and 4.8 still ran on VAlentina, if memory serves correctly.
It's basically the same way you are tunning two different main versions of Studio on the same machine. But there's no guarantee, of course. Perhaps, the safest way is to keep the installers for 4.8 Beta and the 4.8 Beta Plugins saved somewhere, so if installing 4.10 does some damage, you can roll back.
I have 3 versions of 4.8 32 byte, 64, byte versions and 4.8 beta all in the daz 4.8 folder, in fact I have like 6 different versions of daz studio all on one drive and set up to run them all at once if i need to. I found breaking the program folders into their separate folders. and placing them in one main one allows them to run independently , Of course this is on my widows 7 . My win 10 system I can't do it, no way, w10 managing files like that, see it as duplicating data or that is the error i get.
Hi thanks Ivy
atm the 4.8 public beta is my main Daz studio as I missed the 4.8 general download
and have 4.8 PB set up **perfectly** with plugins& addons.
I never render in Iray/3DL and have not had any reason to possibly
upset things with an upgrade as DS is just a Character staging ground before export to C4D or now Lightwave 2015
for rendering.
Dont care about the new 4.10 cloth physics as I can do all of the cloth sims
I need with the optitex DCC and my own mesh models.
However it would be nice to apply some Iclone created BVH motion to
Ivan HD for the G3 male since the 4.10 BVH importer seems to have been updated
for G3.
Anyway I remain on win 7 as well,
so are you saying that only a general release will overwrite my 4.8 PB??
Hi Wolf .. First before you try anything. I would make a back up or shadow copy of what you got now before attempting to install 2 daz beta programs on your system as precuation. thing sometimes happen.
But after you have. I would make a new folder in your c/ Programs File/Daz 3D. Name the new folder Daz 4.8 beta and cut or copy your curent Daz 4.8 beta folder you are currently working with & include plugins and all, cut & move it to the new daz 4.8 folder you just created ..(this moves the files out of the way for the new install 4.10 with out fear of overwritting you older 4.8 software.)
Now start your dimm and download the daz4.10 beta version and let dimm install it.. it will create a new folder called daz3d inside the c/programs files/Daz3d . It will sit on top of the new daz4.8 folder you had created and will be named daz3d with daz4.10 beta inside it . leaving you now with 2 complete versions of daz studio 4.8 & the new install 4.10.. About the appdata file?
the Data files in your App data folder must be just a shared data file system, so far I have not notice it messing with my older installs. it seems to only add the improvements of the new install in the appdate files with out messing with your older ones or at least it hasn't messed up my 4.8 beta version . when I install daz studio this way. I can CUSTOM manage my files to run better on my system, I have my computer sort set up like a server too which helps, .. like I said I have 6 versions of Daz studio both 32 and 64 byte versions including daz 3, daz 4.6, daz4.8,& 4.8 beta daz 4.9 and daz4.9 beta, and daz 4.10 which I installed 3 days ago. I can run them all at once if i need to too. I only use daz studio for my animation program and my pipeline to adobe premiere I have all these versions of daz studio and the tools because I have some great tools for older daz programs that no longer work in the new daz studio 4.9 and I paid good money for them so having many versions of daz alows me to still enjoy what I paid for.
Anyway this was my work around ./. but I really suggest making back ups first if you have never loaded daz programs in separate folder before
edited to add the capture of c/user appdata folder for wolf
Oh I should mention once you installed the new version . you may need to repoint your content manager to make it work withPostgreSQL CMS you can do that under the daz prefference tab. I had to do it a few times when I have many studio versions installed.
Thanks !!!
I am pasting your post into a text file and saving
in case I decide to try this at some point.
Good Luck My friend .
..I thought the change to Postgre was earlier like ver 4.6.
Yes, 4.6 through 4.8 can use either PostgreSQL or Valentina, 4.9 up PostgreSQL only. It weill upgrade the 4.8 databaser to the new format but leave the old tables so that 4.8 will still work with it. Only the list of categories is common to both, the content in each category is kept independently.
Two things to note about running multiple versions of the same release path (e.g. multiple public beta versions):
1 - they use the same AppData locations, so there is the potential for conflicts from that. The General Release and Public Beta use different AppData locations to avoid conflicts
2 - "Default Lights and Shaders for DS" (in DS4.8) was updated to "Default Resources for DS4.9" and there are some changes which are incompatible with 4.8. I'm checking to see if there's a way to manually install the 4.9 versions without overwriting the 4,8 versions.
I knew there was reason why the appdata was reading different but wasn't sure why. so thank you very much for clearing that up. I use 4.8 full version running with 4.8 beta version together all the time I just started using daz 4.9 and 4.9 beta and 4.10 this way. one to create motions on the full version and to render them out on the beta. and never had trouble doing it that way, so now I understand why .. if they have 2 different directories in the appdata it would make sense .. I guess that is why if you load each version of Daz studio into its own seperate folder it will work independingly .. I'm sure glad that it works that way so we can keep using older versions of daz when we upgrade versions of studio
Oh I should mentioned if you make a seperate folder and move your working old copy of beta over to it , then you can just make a clean install of the new beta version because it will create its own new daz3d folder , while still maintaining then old working copy at the same time. it works same way for installing full versions of studio. look above at how i have my daz studios loaded.
Edit..I want to mention that this only works on my windows 7 system my win10 throws me duplicate data errors.
