Can I swap a model's axis labels in DS?

I want to swap a model's axis labels.

What the model calls its X axis, for example, I want to relable as it's Y axis.

I often import models from other platforms and the models get imported sideways and/or backwards and so on. And when I rotate them to proper orientation in DS, the axes labels are then confusing. So it would be nice to be able to re-label the axes for consistency.

While this isn't answering your question, note that on the import screen there is is an "Axis conversion" section, where you can remap one axis to another, thus avoiding the issue.

Thanks for the tip, sriesch. I do try to use that dialog box when it pops up during an import. But there are two problems with that.

    1. This dialog box does not always pop up. For example, it did not pop up when I imported a model of a car in .fbx format. Instead, some other message box appeared that seemed irrelevant - irrelivant because when I clicked past it, the model continued to load. The only problem is, the model loaded sideways and I never got a chance to re-orient it prior to loading because, like I said, that dialog box failed to appear.

    2. The "Invert Positive Direction" has never worked when I tried it. This means that I've gotten stuck with a model imported facing completely 180 and there's nothing I can do about it.

  • Which version of DS are you using (Help>About Daz Studio)? There was a version that had some kind of issue with the axis settings, though I can't recall if it was ignoring the invert setting. One work-around option, if it is an issue in the current build, would be to scale to -100% on the flipped axis, select all polygons with the Geometry Editor tool and flip normals on selected polygons (both in the right-click menu), then export and reimport using the Daz Studio preset to bake the changes.

I'm surprised FBX is inverting - it has far more information than OBJ and I thought that included axis specifications. Are these models you created yourself? If so check your export options in the source application.

Thanks for your assistance, Richard H.

    I use 4.9.4.122 Pro Edition (64-bit)

Well, here are two screenshots. The first one is the message I get when I import the .FBX The second is the resulting load when I click "Accept", which shows the model on its side.

No. This model is a free thing someone else made. It only comes in .3DS fomrat. So I used Autodesk 3DS Max to convert it to .FBX. And I just used the default setting 'cause I'm a nubie who doesn't know what all the export settings parameters do.

Other than the car being on its side, I'm completely happy with the resutls.

  • I'm prettu sure that there will be options on FBX export in Max, but since I don't have it I can't give you any conrete advice. You could try OBJ export, then you have the import options in DS to adjust (and can save a preset from the dialogue once you have some that work).

Just to be clear, by implication you are saying there is no way to re-label a model's axes in Daz Studio. Correct?

  • It's not just a matter of labelling, but no not that I know of

Ok. Thanks for the answer, Richard H!

Shouldn't the Joint Editor be able to do this?

The same way you move local origin you should be able to rotate local axis.

  • If you just want to change the labels of the movement dials, as opposed to the tooltips that appear when you hover over the arrows in the viewport, that's easy.

Select the object, open the Parameters or Posing pane and find the dials you're interested in - the ones that say "X Translate" or "Y Rotate". Click on the cog icon in the top right of each dial and select "Parameter Settings...". One of the parameters you can set is the label - you can change it to whatever you want.

Thanks, Chris. Perhaps I'll try that when all else fails during the import process.
