Orgonizing, buying, and named characters

Ok, Daz3D is officially addicitng.  I never expected to be spending so much money of an "free" program. That said, I'm hoping the more knowledgable might help me figure out how to use what I have most efficiently and help guide me to what I need and what i can easily do myself.  Questions...

1) instead of searching through smart content for something that is wierdly catagrized, can I make my own tab of "stuff i use all the time" for quick access?

2) Similar to the above, if there are things that I apply to a figure all the time because it's a recurring character for me, can I somehow "group" all that stuff so it's a one click application?  IE. Gen 6 female with specific hair, skin, clothing.  I'd love to just be able to open a new file and load my character all set without having to start from scratch.  Is that possible?

3) I have stephanie and just got Michael (6), do I really need other named Gen 6 characters or can I morph these into the different face and body types? i am becoming slow friends with my paremeters tab :)  I wonder if there is any guide to help me morph into cool looking people?  and if I do.. can I save the save and body type to use repeatedly, like "MyCharacter1figure" ?  This is similar to question 2, except refering to morphs instead of add ons.

4) Im investing a lot in Gen 2 characters because they seem to 1. be on sale a lot 2. look good 3. have easier to find cheap stuff and 4. render much faster than gen 8 characters.  Is there anything that will eventually let me use Gen 2 poses for Gen 8? some kinda convertable thingie?

5) Will all the stuff I'm buying, I'm getting a lot of eyes and stuff.  Are eyes, makeyp and skins interchangible between genesis characters?  Ie. should I be able to use stephanie's skin tones on Michael?  What's the "SSS" on some skin options?

thank you guys so much for answering a ton of my questions.  This is really the most amazing forum

  • 1) yes, you can add items to your own categories - right-click on a file or folder in the Content Library pane.

    2) File>Save as>Scene Subset, then check the items you wish to include. For shape and materials, ignoring clothes, you can use a Character Preset; for clothes and props and hair (anything parented to the base figure) a Wearables Preset is an option.

    3) you don't need any others, but the shapes of the other iconic characters are sculpted rather than made from sub-morphs so you probably won't be able to achieve an exact match. A Character preset will save shape adn materials (and will load the figure if it isn't loaded and selected); a Shaping preset will save just the shape.

    5) Eyes can generally be used on other figures of the same generation and sex, and will usually work on the opposite sex though there may be an alert about a missing UV set. Make ups are usually specific to the character, being essentially a fresh copy of the face map with the make-up added, but some come as Layered Image Presets which add separate images for the make-up onto the base image - those will work on other characters using the same UV set.

  • Omg, thank you!!! this is exactly what I needed to know!!!! Any chance you know what SSS stands for with all the skin loads?

  • SSS is sub-surface scattering - emulating the way light enters skin (and other materials) and is scattered back or ahead. Ovrdone it can look waxy.

Do, by the way, bear in mind that Genesis 2 characters will usually have only 3Delight materials (probably using the Age of Armour SSS shader)
