    MAY NOT BE DEAD...

    UPDATE: 5:00 p.m. ET ― Multiple outlets have cited sources claiming that Tom Petty has died. TMZ has updated its story to state that Petty has been taken off life support on a do not resuscitate order but has not yet died. A rep for the LAPD declined to confirm his death to HuffPost and said information on the singer “was inadvertently provided to some media sources” in a tweet.

    I've read that he's not dead too, and that earlier reports were made in error. He's not expected to make the end of the day though :(

    So very sad. His music is woven into the fabric of so many of our memories. I'm not sure I like the idea of a world without Tom Petty in it. He was so talented and unapologetically authentic. Loved his music and his wild, free spirit. We will miss you, Tom. broken heart

    All the BBC has said (that I have heard) is that he was found by paramedics and had suffered a heart attack, nothing mentioned about a death as yet.

    Hes not dead. He is hospitalized for health concerns believed to be related to a heart attack, but still alive. The LAPD has apologized for releasing info that made it seem like he had died.

    When last I clicked on the link to the Billboard article (about 20 mintues ago) they were reporting him as having finally passed after said earlier confusion.  The confusion, of course, will continue to haunt when, exactly, he passed for a while.  Hopefully not too long though.

    This is sad news, indeed. :( 66 isn't that old - that's too young to die. People these days can live decades longer than that, so it's just tragic to see someone taken so soon.

    Rest In Peace, Tom Petty. Your music inspired and helped shape generations - may your music live on and continue to inspire and influence people for ages to come.

    Damn! Tom Petty was phenomenal with George Harrison, Dylan, etc in the Traveling Wilburys, and a great artist in his own right.

    Tom Petty's recordings were consistent, and he released them regularly regardless of how popular he was at any given moment or what the latest trends were. They were true rock-n-roll albums. They were also very, very good. Every one of his albums had at least a handful of songs that resonated with me and packed a strong emotional punch.I also appreciated how he never allowed his performances to devolve into spectacles. His concerts were concerts, first and foremost and he seemed wholly uninterested in cultivating a cult of personality. I will miss him so much.
