Transparent background gone missing

I wanted to do a render on a transparent background, like I usually do, only to discover that I now have an unwanted background on all my renders. I must have accidently changed a setting somehow, and now I can't figure out how to turn the background off. Can anyone tell me how can I get my transparent background back?

    In the Environment tab, you need to set the "Type" to None to get a transparent background. It is not sufficient to leave the type as Backdrop and set the backdrop image to None. (That just uses a solid color backdrop instead of an image file backdrop). This has confused me several times.

    Click the down arrowhead and select None:

    You also want to set Dome OFF in Render Settings.
