Elevated City Subway

Anyone know how you would do an elevated city subway like in Chicago?

It's an older product, but there's one over at Renderosity that looks fairly close. It certainly reminds me of the trains I used to ride into the city in the 80's/90's.

Not entirely sure if the backdrop is supposed to be Chicago or New York.  I don't recognize it, but then again, I don't pay that much attention to what's going on (and I usually ride the blue/red lines, which are mostly subway, as opposed to the other lines that are more elevated)

Now L stops and underpasses are a bit trickier, depending on what you want to do, but there are ways to fake them.

Anyway, I slapped some Iray shaders on the train interior from Renderosity.  I only ran it for 20 minutes (12%), but it should be enough to let you see if it will work for you.

It's New York.  The subway car is actually clearly marked as MTA New York CIty Subway on the exterior, although the ads on the overheads in the interior have a really crazy collection of area codes including numbers in Louisianna and Missouri.

  • I believe that is a Chicago train with MTA symbols on it.  Probaly based on what was in the Spiderman movie

Chicago's system is CTA.  I think the MTA on those is because theyr'e subbing for New York (other than the cars needing to be a few feet shorter to handle the curves of the loop, they're fairly close.)

I thought the MTA on the cars was intended as a faux-system, rather than being the real one.

No.  Both cities have used similar trains over the years, there being only so many companies that actually make trains, after all, but look at the front of the train in the promo images.  It's clearly marked on the front as being one of NYC's D trains, running on 8th Avenue with a destination of 205 st Concourse. (205 is the Bronx, the original stopping point for the real D train.)  Chicago's train lines, on the other hand, are designated by colors, not letters. Also, the reflection map/panorama included... which is NOT the background shown in the promo, btw,... includes a building with the words Empire State in gold letters on a sign.  That said, the car design IS an older model that's no longer in service in NYC... I found a picture of a bunch of them bering dumped in the ocean to form artificial reefs... but some similar models are still running in Chicago.
