Oceana for G3F?

Fae3DFae3D Posts: 2,876

Does anyone know how to get https://www.daz3d.com/oceana to work on G3F?  The only reason I thought it could be done is because, unlike later mermaid tails that use geografts, this mermaid tail appears to be an article of clothing.  When I try it on G3F, it stretches out horribly and looks all wrong.  Has anyone tried it and found a way to fit it on to her nicely?

How about posing character in t position, parent tail to hip, turn off visibility to everything below hip?

The problem with parenting it is that then there is a definate "break" where her tail meets her torso. You can see transparency at the sides of the hips, and the texture is very blocky.  Here are some pics to show what I mean.  The first is autofitted, the second is parented with everything below the hips hidden.

That item is for V4. How are you fitting it to G3? I use Wear Them All for most older items and it does a great job, usually. Some meshes just break no matter what.

I haven't tried Oceana yet, but I do own it. I'm downloading it now over my slow connection. Will play with it in the morning.

I am also using Wear Them All for the autofitting.  Good luck, let me know if you get a proper mermaid tail from it!

I think at that point, you have to roll your own opacity map for the hip so that you don’t have to turn off its transparency...

Ah, I think this is like the autofit shoe issues we run into sometimes. There are extra bones in the feet of G3F and sometimes shoes just don't fit right. I've got a scene loaded with V4, G3F and G8F. I can get everything to fit with Wear Them All except that tail. It goes nuts at the feet only.

We could try one of Sickleyield's methods to get this to fit. I'll look that up in the morning. Gotta hit the hay.

This is what I do for mermaid tails, use smoothing but you need to shrink down the feet shins and thighs until they disapear into the torso, and lock the scale sliders

Select the toe scale until it shrinks and lock the slider (some poses will reset the scaling if you don't), repeat for the left and right toes foot shin and thigh.

Parent the tail to the hip and use smoothing so it fits.

I don't have the Oceana tail but I've done it with the V4 Lost Tails on G3F. I had to use the geometry tool to hide the back upper fins as I couldn't get them to behave.

Its a bit fiddly sometimes with some poses you need to alter the pelvis a bit.

  • Sorry, but the images need to have the figure wearing a top.

    Sorry - I know better.

That's a good idea, Scorpio. I used that here on Teen Josie 8. (Very grainy render, just a quick test.)

I did not start at the default position, so getting the tail to look right took a little extra time. I turned off her lower legs, and then adjusted the tail until I got it as close as I could, then parented it. There are an incredible amount of bones and morphs in this set, especially the tail. Every part is highly adjustable, it just takes some time to get it looking right. The smoothing really helps. I still need to work on the waist a little, as there's a shadow on part of it. I may start a fresh file with her in default position and see if I can get a better fit.

Also, the waistband has a ton of morphs and bones, but the bones are lost in the autofit. I will try parenting that as well so I can pose it better. The textures seem to convert well to Iray. I may play with metallicity and gloss, but this is just the default conversion. What a well-made set!

Note: I also have a G3F over to the side, out of camera range here. I'm going to look up Sickleyield's tutorial about moving stuff over with the bones intact and see if it works on the tail.

I feel really dumb to have to ask this, but both scorpio and Llynara mentioned smoothing.  I must be missing it, because I do not see an option for smoothing under Parameters when I parent the tail OR autofit it.  I assume ya'll are talking about something else, in a different menu maybe?

No worries, you will find it by going to Edit->Geometry->Figure->Add Smoothing Modifier

Once you do that, you'll find Smoothing in your parameters tab and you can turn it up or down. I think I had it set to level 3, which was fine for this render.

Awesome, learned something new! Thanks! ^_^

Now, let me see if I understand - The best way to address this is probably to NOT autofit, parent to hip, and use smoothing modifier and morphs to try to make it fit the hip/tummy area as neatly as possible.  There may be a bit of shadow, but maybe I can hide it.  Does that sound like I've got it?

I think so. It's the simplest way to preserve the bones, which disappear if you autofit, and also keeps that crazy breakage from happening at the feet. I will try with the Sickleyield tutorial soon, but I think that's going to be more involved.

Ok, thanks, I really appreciate your help!  It seems I learn new things everyday with DAZ, no matter how long I've been using it!

    Thanks everyone!!!  ^_^

  • Hello, i'm new to DAZ and have found your comments very helpful. I've gotten a little further with the oceana mermaid but still struggling. I can't seem to get the tail to copy the poses that I've purchased. I know i'm going to be missing something very simple and would appreciate your help. Thank you.
