Genesis 8 not already HD?

I saw a Victoria 8 HD morph today. I thought the Genesis 8 meshes were already HD. I realize I didn't read it in any of the descriptions, but I guess I wrongly assumed this.

Why would they make the mesh HD when it's not absolutely essential for most users?
Only parts seem to be hd. Seems odd to me since hd morphs are really necessary to achieve the look of the character, but guess it is a way to charge more for the complete figure
Yea. I'm confused as well. I thought Victoria 8 was HD already. Now it has me questioning what I know about HD. What is it exactly? Is it just an updated mesh with more "resolution" or does it come with updated texture maps as well?
I'm confused too..I thought one of the pros of getting the 8 series figures was they were supposed to look better already?
Genesis 8 is basically just genesis 3 in most of the main areas. I personally think the HD morphs should be part of the character now.
The only HD morphs I use are Zev0's vascularity morphs and Aging Morphs; I have Victoria 7HD and have only trird it one time.
What does it really add that normal and bump maps can't achieve? It's pretty imperceptible.
The V8 HD product is a set of High Definition morphs for V8 to bring an extra amount of detail.
It does not change the actual mesh of the Genesis 8 figure, it just uses a subdivided mesh to bring in details that you would not ordinarily be able to achieve with a base level mesh.
See the details between the pic on the left and the one on the right?......the right is the HD details
The standard expression morphs are HD, and this is fairly important as the expressions are one of the main areas of improvement G8 made over G3.
The basic Genesis 8 mesh is naturally not HD, nor is the V8 morph when dialled in. However by default the mesh is set to high definition, which just means it is subdivided once, which makes the mesh appear smoother. Without the subdivision, parts of the mesh, particularly the top of the head, will look a bit jagged as the polygon boundaries can be seen.
Of course subdividing a mesh does not make it HD, but if you do have any HD morphs (eg V8 HD), then you need to set the sub division to Sub-D 1 or higher in order to see the HD morphs.
I really only use HD for the men, where more details in the hands and face are needed to avoid excess smoothness. Enough vendors now make their famele characters Hd, that buying DAZ 3d hd morphs is not neccessary for me.
The same could be asked of the creation of Genesis 8 in the first place...just saying.
I understand that for sure. I just thought the whole purpose of Genesis 8 was to add HD functionality to the mesh instead of making it just like Genesis 3 then adding an HD mesh for like gaming.
It's maybe worth pointing out that the HD versions of the characters basically turn the normal maps into mesh-- or at least did in extensive testing of the Genesis 3 ones. I'm sure there are reasons for some people to pick up the HD packs but for most people normal maps are fine... and if you want a more weathered, chiseled look you can just turn the normal map up past the ordinary limits.
For me, the more detail I can add, the better. Most of the PA HD morphs that I've used distort when turned past the limit, but the DO HD morphs don't. I've noticed that most of my favorite human faces have lots of HD, so to speak.
HD does nto add anything to the mesh.
All Genesis figures have the capacity for having HD morphs added to them
The HD is a result of D/S allowing meshes to be subdivided within the program, so that can actually be applied to any figure. All that is required to make HD morphs is the HD morph tool that DAZ supplies to their PA's. What we do then is subdivide the mesh we are working on, sculpt onto that HD mesh, and then import it back in with the HD morph tool.
So the HD is a functionality of D/S not a functionality of the mesh object.
Hope that clears things up
I don't suppose anyone has any renders they can post as an example of the HD sets from Daz? I'm tempted to get one, but wouuld like to see the finished product before I do
Sorry, got the mesh confused with morph, but it clears it up a bit. Thanks.
Also, huge fan of your work, RawArt. :)
Thanx :)
They might compared to vanilla Genesis 3.
I don't think they look better. Whether it's fair or not, I compare against the mature Genesis 3 with the additional morphs and HD addons that I have. In that regard, I don't think Genesis 8 is there yet.
I've purchased V8 Pro, a number of morphs and accessories and haven't even used her yet.

Same here - it's simply a matter of turning a few dials to turn it off, if lower poly gaming is the goal. I have no idea for the sales and use of the figures, but it still seems to be primarily the still renders where the greater details are appreciated here. I have picked up a number of characters from PA's that lack HD detail, or advertise as such and seem to lack it, and they now have a toony kind of look to them compared to a figure with good HD details & nomal maps.
You have to realize that there are different skill levels among different pa's.....some may claim to have hd details because they made the morph at a sub-d level, but that doesnt mean they took the extra time to add the amount of details that they really could. I know for my characters that I can spend and entire day or two just on the hd details.
Which is a reason you are one of the absolute best RawArt
Yeah, you're one of the artists whose content I've never been disappointed with.

I assumed this too and am pretty annoyed that it isn't the case. I thought that was one of the selling points of Genesis 8. Not happy to find out there are yet more "add-ons" needed for the HD. It should be part of the new line and the Pro packs.
They never said the base figure was HD; the only thing that was by default was the expressions. And, quite honestly, if HD ever comes included with any DAZ Original (including Genesis 9), I simply will not download it, because I do not need the useless (to my prefered art style) content filling my hard drive; yes, I have a terabylte hard drive, but I still don't see the need to install content I have no interest in using.
The advertising sure made it sound like the character was HD. Not the first time advertising here has been misleading and/or downright confusing.
Has the base figure ever been HD?
I refuse to buy the HD for characters. Selling them at nearly the SAME PRICE as the base character is insane. For them to charge that much for a single character and then expect you to shell out nearly DOUBLE just to have the HD is gross. Why is it even sold separate in this day and age of Iray and most people working toward photorealism in their renders, it is just bizarre to sell the HD separate and then charge another $40 for it.
