"There is no perfect answer for all imaginable problems."

As Pertercat said. The only thing that doesn't work, as Geminii23 will no doubt agree, is no backup at all. Once we are able to convince everyone of the value of backups, then perhaps we can quibble over which solution is best.

  • I'm going to have a memory chip implanted in my liver, powered by body electricity, accessed by wireless and have all my data stored there.  That way it's as safe as I am and I can take it with me when I go. devil

PS:  I'd have it implanted in my brain but I'm old fashioned. indecision

I'm surprised how many people there are that are not backing up their important files. But I guess you have to lose something valuable before you realize how important a backup is.

In the late 1990s I had my computer stolen which had my only copy of threads on a local BBS going back to the late 1980s.

So frustrating, particularly since it was a piece of poo that wasn't worth much, just valuable to ME. (I think the thing had a 64 mb hard drive. Partitioned into two drives because the Os couldn't handle all that)

I am thrilled to have cloud backups because I've always found physical backups a hassle.

i need to keep two backups because one might go bad.

i have to remember to backup stuff.

i have to organize the stuff so I actually have everything covered.

There's potentially a long wait for files to transfer.

I have to find somewhere good to save my stuff.

If it's broken into several volumes, I have to figure out how to divide my data into chunks that will fit in each volume/USB/Zip drive/rewriteable laser disk...

I have to label all those volumes so I remember which is which

If I don't want to sit around every evening to backup everything twice, I have to only update one volume... which requires checking which part of my stack of save media actually changed and be sure to only update that section with the correct files.

Pay for media and test it periodically to make sure it's still working.

    With cloud?

    Turn on the app.

Keep it on or switch it on when I want stuff updated.

Make sure PayPal has enough in it monthly.

Have a decent internet connection (which is obviously a deal breaker for many in the Us)

timmins.william, I hear ya...but I think if you investigate some alternative free methods, many of those "pain in the butt" issues dissolve away.

There is a method where none of those steps you mention under "cloud" are even necessary.

My method is pretty simple and similar to Will's

I have a seperate internal drive that I set up Windows to automatically back up certain folders to. Those backups are in folders that are linked to my free cloud storage accounts so both my physical backup and my cloud backup are all automatic. the only thing I have to do is ocassionally go through and delete old backups.

The only reason I made the fireproof safe comment was to reitterate that nothing is 100% and I think the name gives a false sense of security if something tragic should happen to the home. Which of course is unlikely but could happen.

Just remember, with Proton decay, all methods have limits...

If you get it implanted in your brain we will have to start calling you Simon.
Can you imagine the nightmare of having perfect recall of everything that you've ever experienced?
