New Daz upgrade-Is it worth it?
in The Commons
Hi guys,
I have been holding off updating my Daz software mainly because of all of the issues people are havig with it. Just wanted to know from those that have had success with update, if there is much of a difference to warrant upgrading? What has changed? Is it significantly better?

I don't know about significantly. I have been using the beta for a long time now and I think it works great.
Truthfully, I'd like to see more folks trying out beta versions to help find issues and get them fixed.
Its ok to try the beta. You still keep your main install, it will not be effected. Most of the stuff you save in either version (scenes, presets, morphs, ect,) will all work in both versions. Some plugins might not be available in the beta due their file structure like GenX (and I don't desire to mess with them more than I already have.) But again, you still have your main install if you need them. There new features are available, like the Iray Dual Lobe Specularity (which will nullify any Glossy settings on that surface if you turn it on above 0.)
There are some things I like, and a few I don't. I'm happy to keep 4.8 around for those certain things and roll with the beta.
I've been using the beta and it's been running fine. I tried the newest stable version of DS with the same number and had problems. Go figure ;).

No problems with the newst DS public release or Beta. I usually stay up to date with DS anymore. I don't remeber any huge performance improvements, but IIRC there are a few new features, and a few bug fixes. Keep in mind that you typically only get posts from those that have problems, so ask yourself if your more likely to have a set up like anyone having issues (sometimes you get enough info to know it might be a unique system set up, or a non-standard content library set-up, or .......). I would guess that the vast majority of users have little or no problems. I typically wait a week or so before upgrading, and if the forums don't blow up with unhapppy users, then I go ahead and upgrade (I also always run the beta as well so I know what to expect).
Pass! I am never an early adopter of new versions of software for this very reason. i want to start with a stable, bug free version
Which particular Daz Software. One assumes that you mean Daz Studio (D|S) as the other Daz softwares have not seen recent updates (ie Bryce Carrara and Hexagon)
I switch between release and beta; I have 4.9.4.117 release; I understand that the later build, 4.9.4.122(iirc it's 122), was to fix an issue some folks were reporting. I didn't upgrade as didn't have that issue. It's stable.
As others have said, try the beta, if you don't like it uninstall and return to what you're using.
I know this has been asked before, but I have read some things to the contrary on these forums. If I'm running Studio 4.8 (stable with no issues) and want to also run the latest version (4.9x) can they both co-exist on my PC or will 4.9 wipe out 4.8 before installing? I know you're supposed to be able to run both, but I've read some folks have had issues trying to do this. Are we at the point where runing both is reliably possible?
No you cant run 4.8 Pro and 4.9 pro together, 4.9 will wipe 4.8. You can however, run 4.8 pro and 4.9 BETA together. Which is what I do on my laptop. I have 4.9 pro and 4.9 beta on my pc and the both work just fine.
I made the mistake of trying to upgrade to the latest version, it uninstalled my prior versin but won't install anything new, giving a message that it encountered an error running the uninstaller (even though it ran) and exiting. No matter what I do or where I try to install, it does not install and only gives this same message.
Eh, I was able to get around it by renaming my existing folders to a temporary name, then installing, and then copying the contents of the newly-installed folders into the existing renamed folders, then switching the names back and getting rid of the empty newly-installed folders. Not a hard workaround, but irksome nonetheless, hopefully the actual newer version will behave better than the installer did. :)
You shouldn't have content in the application folder anyway, and plug-ins may have updates for 4.9 (the Daz-branded ones will).
Does this version of 4.9 insist on installing itself -- and maybe other things -- to my C drive? I had issues with that (among other things) the first time I tried so I got rid of it; to be fair now that I think of it, perhaps DIM was to blame for sticking it there.
No, though DIM will default to locations on the C: drive you can change those - and DS will use the location of the Documents folder for save files (by default), so if you've told Widnows to move that DS will respect it (of course thata pplies only on a clean isntall - it won't change existing locations, though the fist install of 4.9.x.x will use the Docuemnts folder for Connect installs).
