How to make mouth morphs without moving the teeth?

I'm learning morphs in ZBrush and have run into an issue with making lip morphs. Even subtle morphs tend to move the teeth (even if a little bit). How do I make morphs to the lips without it affecting the teeth?

  • I use the "Move topological" brush when manipulating the mesh on the face, as it doesn't affect the eyes or teeth that I've seen. Be sure to adjust the size of the brush and the intensity to avoid shifting too much unless you want big pouty lips.

I have some Zbrush tutorials I made a few years ago while learning.  You need to hide the inner mouth.
You can find the tut here, it goes through the entire process of making a morph.  Also see the other tutorials on the site.

    1. Import the obj with surface materials (sorry, I don't use GoZ  for morphs)

    2. Store a Morph Target (StoreMT) of the base.

    3. Select the face using shift ctrl which will hide everything but the face

    4. shift ctrl drag in an emply part of the doc and it will reverse the selection.

    5. shift ctrl on the lips and it will add it to the hidden face.

    6. ctrl click in an empty area of the doc and it will mask all visible.

7 shft ctrl  tap in an empty area and it will bring back the hidden elemens

Now everything but the face and lips are masked and you can make you morphs.  Use BMO to call up the morph brush if you need to erase any part of your morph you desire.

Cool! Thank you, I'll try that. :)

Wow... I don't know how to do any of this. lol How do you import into ZBrush with the surface materials intact?

Never mind - I'm a dummy. LOL I found some tutorials on how to do everything you said. THANK YOU! Love the step by step! It's very helpful! :)

Once I figured out how to export with the texture and create a Morph Target it was easy. Thanks for your help, Cris! This is going to save me a big headache!

YW.  I like to create a set of objs for my bases.  I export with surfaces and one with nodes and a third with existing groups as they all give you different ways to select things.  Explore the polygroups in each to see which one will give you the selectability you want.  Surface will let me do the lashes as a full separate group of all the lashes.  The other types select one set of lashes at a time. Also, gives you different selections for the face and back of the head.  So it's a good thing to see your options.
