Can someone remind me of the "eye fix" for G3 to G8

I know it's burried somewhere and I bookmarked it but I can't seem to find how to fix G3's eye materials for G8.  I know it entails some map swapping but my eyes still look weird so I'm doing something wrong. I think Llynara posted it.

If I recall correctly, you apply the G8 eyes, then go into the Surfaces->Editor, find "Irises" and swap in the iris image you want to use. But I'm sure @Llynara will come in soon and let us know just how faulty my memory is...!

Yep, that's it. Good memory, L'Adair!

Here's how I do it (I don't know if it's better or not than just switching out the Irises texture - this is just how I do it). Click on your G8F, go to the Surfaces Tab and then Control +Click on all six Eye Texture Zones:

Then navigate to the Genesis 8 character materials you want in the Smart Content >> Materials tab. Control +Double Click on the material icon. When the pop-up comes up pick Surfaces: "Selected", Images: "Replace" and hit Accept:

That should replace all the eye mats with G8 mats and fix the issue.

Again, I don't know if it's better or not, but it's just how I do it.

To keep from having to do it over and over again you can save the eye materials as a "Material Preset" if you want.

For future use of those mats without the hassle, just select on the character then go to File >> Save As >> Material(s) Preset. Uncheck everything except the eye texture zones and then hit accept.

The preset can now be found in your Library >> Presets >> Materials. Now you can easily apply those materials to any G8F character.

For many, but not all of the Genesis 3 eye materials, I've found that simply copying the cornea materials to the eye moisture gets rid of the weird ring effect. The cornea and eye moisture are one geometry in G8F.

Thanks for the tip, I'll try that.

I've had no issues copy G3 over, just be sure to copy moisture to the main model and to the eyelash; yes, it exists in both places.

I don't believe I've actually tried just loading a G3 preset, as I rarely use them on G3 anyway. :)

I think I've stumbled upon the answer to one issue. If your character has a white cornea covering her eyes, go into the Surfaces->Editor, find the Cornea surface and turn the Thin Walled parameter to "On"... I'm not sure if that solves the "weird ring effect" Redz mentions above, but it is the one major difference I found between in the Cornea settings for G3F and those for G8F. And when I turned it on, the white "cataract" disappeared.

For 3Delight, the Glossiness and Specular Color/STR bring in the eye wetness.  Opacity Str is set to Zero, Ambient is black and 100%.  No Bump map, no normal map, no reflection.  Use the Daz Studio Default material (I have seen Omnifreaker's UberSurface Base used as well).  Eye Moisture pretty much has the same settings.

If the cornea has opacity at all, then we have the "contact lens" white ring around the eye.

I forgot to mention this, above, is Iray.

Thank you, @dracorn, for the info on the 3Delight side of the issue. I'm going to tuck that info away for future reference as I do render in 3DL from time to time.

No problem, L'Adair.  I'm still fiddling with the settings, because I don't particularly like the glassy-eye look.  I really liked the tear in G2 and actually by-passed G3 for various reasons.  The PowerPose feature of G8 is what convinced me to make that purchase, but now I am forced to mess with the G3 issues now.

I render exclusively in 3DL.  Will I play around with Iray?  Eventually, but I'm still having fun with 3DL and like the way it looks better in the dark.  That Iray graininess drives me nuts, and I think hair looks better in 3DL.  Some say that 3DL's colors are oversaturated, but that's something I happen to like.  I always loved when Dorothy opened the door to Oz, and drooled over Avatar's colors.  You can imagine why I don't like movies with desatruated color.  I think that's overused.

I boost the saturation on Iray renders for just this reason.

I thought I've read taht the "ring" effect is because the iris sizes are slightly different between G3F and G8F. I seem to remember this showing up during the  flurry of introduction/conversion posts.

    I never have any issues.

When I'm copying shaders over, I do:

    1. Save a Shader preset, I usually chose the Torso.

    2. Save a Material preset all except eyelashes.

    3. Save a Material preset - only eyelashes and eye moisture

    Then apply them to G8.

If both G3 and G8 are loaded, and G8 has comparable shader to G3, then in the surfaces tab, highlight the appropriate materials copy, and paste on G8 and on G8 eyelashes.

The geometry has never caused me issues.
