DAZ Wiki

I dropped this idea in a thread a few days ago ( can't find it anymore :( ) and thought I might post this as its own thread.

My idea is to have something like a community-driven wiki (I'd appreciate DAZ input as well, ofc.), where all the valuable information that is widely spread across this board can be concentrated and easy to access. There is so much good information about how to fix this, how to do this best, how to ..., but when you need that info, you barely can find it, if at all.
I know that I often spend quite some time to find out things, others have found out way before me and found a solution for it already. And this is after having worked with DAZ for years, more or less. How confusing must it be for newcomers, then?
Plus, no matter how hard you try, you can't become an expert in everything, so you need help of others, where others might need your help. The forum is good while the topic is on the first pages, after that it is just "gone". So topics repeat themselves over time, over and over again.

I must admit I have no clue what the best setup could be, how the authors could be managed, but every idea has to start somewhere, right? :)

What do you think?

  • Daz has their own "official" documentation center.  Not sure they'd have input on a 2nd one.

The DAZ Wiki used to be a more public Wiki, and it was abused and hacked a lot,   as was the Freebie Wiki, that some regular freebie providers had started up.   They had to completely close the freebie one down and start it all over again, because of spammers etc.

It is not easy to run an open WIki and keep it clean and tidy,  it needs as much work as running a website, with regular moderators etc.

You could make one with access restricted to members approved by the admin only (like well known DAZ forum members).

Without careful monitoring wikis go wonky.

DAZ tried a wiki for a while, it was pitiful.  Much like their massively unfinished on-line manual but worse.

Ah yes, I see. The powers of spam. Didn't think about this, though I should have.

I like that idea to hand out access only to users known from these forums. Most users have a long history, those are easy to verify and I think they would/should behave. It's trickier to allow access to new ones, but it could be handled in a way that they hand over new content to a verified user, who adds it. That user who provided the content gets a "plus" and if he collected enough he gets access even without being too active on the forums.

Just want to say, it does not have to be wide-open to the public in terms of being able to edit things.

But I see that this might be much more work, than I initially thought it would be... :-|

Well I know quite I few that I consider trustworthy (the point is to avoid hackers and others who want to abuse the system or mess things up).

As long as it's about technical stuff only and not things like politics, religion or other controversial topics I wouldn't expect too many problems.

    Insert ironic laughter here.
