Genesis 8 Backward Compatibility, what does it realy mean?

Hi all,

I'm just wondering how far this goes, this backward compatibility. It's mentioned that all G3,2,1 clothes and wearables can be used on G8. Does that include hair? Does that include morphs? (and do I dare to ask: what about the "private parts")? Can anybody clear this up?

Because that is what backxard compatibility means to me: EVERYTHING that runs on the previous thing also runs on the new one. It would be mighty sweet if G1, 2 and 3 morphs could be used on G8 just like that. Because the G8 figure does look great.

Kind regards,

Me

well, it doesn't mean she is compatible in Carrara.  crash test dmmi

I can tell you that glove items aren't mentioned in her "fit to" sheet.  They refuse to "fit to" her at all. Aaarrrrgh.

Standard shoes fit well, high heels can be forced to fit by using an adapted Sickleyield script. Below miss Victoria 8 wearing her older siblings shoes.....but it's not as straight forward but highheels never are!

Some clothing item fit like a glove (except gloves of course) and other fit like hell and will need a lot of attention of the JCM variety.....especially loose fitting shirts and a the bolero jacket of the Deadly Isabel 7 clothing fits indeed pretty badly.  But everything is solvable given the right amount of time and the right amount of persistence.

  • Anybody tried to use G3 morphs or poses yet?

    Thanks a lot,

How about facial expressions - can one use old facial expressions from Genesis 3 based on facial rigging or not? I saw new G8 expressions in the shop as HD morphs, not bone drivers. Does it mean returning to old G2 expression technology or it is purposed for HD characters only? And clones for previous Genesis generations - are they enough precise to be used for morph transferring from, say, G3F or G2F to G8?  With textures for G3 we had one UV-Swapping product, which allows to swap UVs between G3F and G3M - does Genesis 8 Female have any UV set for G3M too?

G8F comes with (only) UVs compatible with G3F - the templates are identical apart from backs of nails and some stuff with the eyes that are still compatible (3 to 8, not vice versa on the eyes, I think).

Main mesh is identical apart from fingers, toes etc, and there are G3 F and M, G2 F and M and Genesis clones. So Transfer utility should should transfer most G3F morphs perfectly, and the rest very well - better than Transfer utility or GenX could do V4>Genesis>G2F>G3F (and that ws pretty damn well for most things.

For posing G3G and G8F are almost identical APART from G8F having zeroed position with shldrbend bend 45 degrees down and thighbend side-to-side 6 degrees out. G3F poses on G8F can be corrected just by adding/subtracting appropriate amount from those four bends. See Freebie section in this forum, or go direct to ShareCG DAZ Studio section for a pose correction script I just whipped up: Apply G3F pose to G8F (perfect apart from shoulder and thigh bends), then with G*F selected just click my script and it will add and subtract those four amounts from theose four bends and fix the arms and legs. Best to add the script as a custom action so it's in the script menu and you can add it to the toolbar. Then just use G3F poses on G8F, clicking the action each time which will fix it.

If the meshes are so similar, would it be possible to use some G3 HD add-ons with G8? Sorry for my ignorance but it seems to me that the main issue with low poly models is the need for HD for realism. Otherwise, some method of creating normal maps from G3 HD figures might be an option?

Thanks, DavidGB, for sharing your script! I'm happy to hear they did not alter much in default pose and kept fingers and hands intact. What about identical meshes - is it true for facial topology too? For me, the most important part of any character is her\his  face and perhaps breast shapes for females. Haven'y anyone tested transferring of full head morphs from G3F or G3M - how do eyes, teeth and eyelashes behave on the transferred shape? It seems that conformed eyelashes should not be torn or distorted anymore as it took place with Genesis 3. And, yes, the ever-painful question of HD morphs. About a half of G3 characters was made as HD - if straightforward usage of HD addons is impossible, can I bake these morphs into a normal map and use this map right on G8? Would be great if it is so easy.

thank you for the post, info and contribution.

But I totally called this. They always change something in the base pose. Normally the feet, but often in the arms to jack up prior pose sets! I totally won a bet with noone!

    EDIT: she's also 2 months early.  T_T

Edit2: She's not daz connect only... so i was wrong twice. meanwhile 2 sets of Aiko7 expressionsare still hidden away from me in connect only status...daz always so cruel to me.

I've tried a number of G2F and G3F hairs and have found that they all autofit without problems. My samples have included several hairs that have addition addons such as braids, tails, buns and so forth.

I've done limited clothing trials but haven't been having trouble except wth high heels. Here's a screen cap of Aeron for G2F on V8. Also includes a G2F hair. I just used the full outfit selection then followed autiofit for each item (holsters, knives, guns, top and so forth). In all cases I used the "full Body" option. You can see that everthing fit perfectly, including gloves. The high heel boots of course didn't fit.

Autofit doesn´t work on all outfits. I noticed that many parts offered by DAZ are recognized by the autofit, for example gloves. When loading them autofit recognizes it as gloves, some other products aren´t recognized. So when you try to autofit some other gloves on G8 they appear in the original pose of the older figures, after fitting them to G8 they shorly appear on the right position but then are on the zeroed position.

And there is also the old problem with the crotch area. When fitting a bikini panty (for example Hongyu´s) the crotch area is distorted when moving the thighs.

I hope that DAZ will correct those problems.

    Thanks for the replies!

Any good tutorials out there on how to transfer morphs using the transfer tool?

@DavidGB thanks dude! Your script is fantastic, Thanks for making this for me (and us here!)

The auto fit for G8 is so nice, all the G's work well for me so far. To think about it, the older content is worth buying, especially notably when on sale. yessmiley This must please the PA's I'd think.

With backward compatability what textures are supposed to be useable on Genesis 8 Female? In some quick experiments I tried some G3F textures and they seemed to work OK; but when I tried G2F and earlier textures they didn't work properly.

G2F textures do not work on G8...only G3 Female textures. In order to use G2F textures you'll need to convert them to the udim format or whatever format they've been using since Genesis 3. Blacksmith Texture Transformer will do it I'm told, but it's an extra expense and not sold here, but at Rendo.

G8 is not only incompatible with all V4, G1, and G2 poses, but also with G3 poses. You call that compatible Daz? Shame on you. You expect me to buy all pose content again for the third time? This is so infuriating. Besides judging by the free base figure it doesn't even seem to be an improvement.
