Well, that's good news! :)
Laurie
I'm liking V8. I think I'll like her even more once I can transfer the bones to my G7 clothing to put on her and when she gets her HD morphs ;).
Laurie
Expression is sooooo much more real looking...
It is, and maybe what is throwing people off a little is that she looks a bit OLDER than previous Vickys, which isn't a problem for me in the least, but some might want their extremely young looking Vicky ;). I actually like that she looks a little older. One can make her look any way they want tho with a few spins of the dial :).
Laurie
I like that render. She reminds me of Eva Green. I like that.
I like her as well. She definitely poses better and the facial expressions are a vast improvement over previous characters. She is also not "model perfect". But rather a bit more like an an " everyday person". I also like the very subtle nasolabial (sp ?) lines around the mouth and the tiny lines under the eyes. Much more realistic. There are some hd morphs in shaping dials that let you play those up as well as add creases in the chin or forehead wrinkles to varying degrees. It all gives you the ability to add "character" or subtly age her up a bit.
I'm wondering if DAZ might have caused themselves a marketing problem.
Genesis 8 consists entirely of technology advancements. This time (perhaps to save money) they are using the same mesh (with a few tweaks) as the previous generation. And it shows. If you were casually glancing through the pics in the store and didn't notice all the mentions of "8", you'd just see another day in the cycle of Genesis 3. If you go back through the store there's a very clear visual demarkation between G2 and G3; but Victoria 8 looks no more significant (parhaps less so) than, say, Rune or Ophelia.
Will enough people buy into a new generation that doesn't look like one?
The most backward compatibility ever, through included clones for Genesis, Genesis 2, & Genesis 3
So this just means the clothes and props "clones" I normally buy are included? Nothing as great as you can inject V4 people or G3 people into this model with no headaches? I *just* got into G3. Literally. I am redoing all my comic characters in G2/G3 b/c I have so much content and I wanted to use the greatness that was G3's face. Now this! I want to be on the band wagon, but I don't see anything yet to get me excited. I don't even really like her face all that much. :( But before I don't buy it while it is on sale, I just wanted to confirm that I didn't miss something and she isn't as backwards compatible as I would like :) My existing clothes and hair will work on her out of the box for G1/2/3, but most skins and all the character morphs are a no go. Am I getting it right?
Oh well, maybe some of that G3 stuff I wanted will go on sale LOL :)
I have not downloaded or tried yet.
Is her mesh higher - lower - or about the same from a Poly count?
I think this is because the G3 figures were such a step closer in realism that any steps past that will seem insignificant in comparrison :P. Vicky 6 was very stylized. Vicky 7 looked like a person. Vicky 8 looks like....a person ;). Subsequent generations are going to be more for tech than for looks since the G3s looked so nice.

Sickleyield posted a tutorial on how to get G3 clothing to G8 WITH all the custom bones and also how to get G8 clothing to fit G3 :D. And it looks pretty easy actually. If it is just that easy then it means that as long as clothing is made for the G8 characters you can always have something new and shiny for your G3 characters. :D
Laurie
But the tech is the important thing. It's the underlying tech that allows you to make the character look pretty much any way you want it to. Bring on the tech I say!
G3F skins will work on G8F.
SY is da real MVP. Thanks for sharing that video. It works splendidly.
Now if they just left the feet alone the same would work for shoes. Alas.
I don't mind that she looks a bit older. I actually like that she doesn't look like she's 20. I just don't think she's that pretty. The only way I would probably get her is if someone makes a character for her that I like. I will admit that the expressions are very nice.
This is indeed valuable, I love her tutorials! *Bows feverishly, I'm not worthy, I'm not worthy!*
Pretty much agree with that, but it remains the case that there is no visual distinction between generations. V7 and V8 do look like people: people who are closely related. This will likely carry on with further "base" figures in the G8 range.
Hence wondering about marketing problem. Car makers carefully present a new range in different clothes, even if it isn't really that new. Folk buy with their eyes.
G8F plus some time in zbrush
A couple of G8F tests. The first is from my 'free content only' account, autofitting a G3M outfit (which seems to cover in the right places, as it turns out). The second is using a couple of paid products (a G3F skin, and G3M male hair). So far, things going well. Can't say much for the default G8F nose and chin, though.
Update for Interested Poser Users: Many though not all of the morphs appear to be non-functional. Applying V8 makes the figure taller but otherwise changes nothing, while the Bodybuilder morph works just fine. It's really weird, actually, as I haven't yet identified what distinguishes the ones that work from the ones that don't.
I've been trying to adapt one of my characters to G8F. It wasn't easy trying to "copy" the morphs from the G2F version to G3F. But it's even worse trying to do a G8F version of her (from the G3F version)... She looks like a man. Maybe it's because the new models are meant to be more realistic... I don't know... It's just bugging the heck out of me.
I feel bad for folks who shelled out for the Centaur 7 line and now face all this G8 stuff.
Hello all,
I downloaded the update and of course got the Genesis 8 base models but I have no interest in buying Vicky or Mike or any other figures from the 8th realm. I've been holding off on my decision until a discusiion like this one was well underway. So thanks for all your insights and opinions.
I have seen nothing to convince me it is time to migrate upward. Seriously, whether I look in the galleries or browse new products in the store I do NOT see any renders that are more realistic than what people have done with Gensis 3. Hell when G3 came out, people were doing fenominal things with previous figures. From what I've learned from browsing the galleries over the years is that if you keep at it and learn new techniques, you can accomplish anything.
I didn't start to get serious with using Daz Studio and the figures until G2. Oh, I've bought figures and content since V3/A3, but I never really took the time to learn and create until G2 came out (time was finally available to me). So of course I started buying stuff for G2, thinking I'm ready to get serious. And then soon there after G3 came out. Crap. But I admit, I was really impressed with the base figures and how much better Vic 7 and Mic 7 looked. So, having only just started to get serious, I chose to focus on G3 instead. And as you can see from my image, I've spent a lot of money to help me make G3 as realistic as I can (before having to develop my own morphs and modifications).
2 years and over 2 grand later (not just on plugins obviously) I see the dreaded Genesis 8 arrive (oddly just the female first). And before I can even let myself get remotely excited by the possibilty that she might be better and more advanced then her predecessor, I see the Bend Control for Genesis 8 Female(s) advertised in a Daz email. My reaction immediately was "Are you f'in kidding me?!" She doesn't have any of these fixes in her? Then why for the life of me would I want her (not to sound rude -- I haven't even meet her)?
I would not and will not migrate to a new figure base until the figure by default has all or most of the realistic improvements already in them. Otherwise it's like going from Windows 7 to Windows 8 -- there's nothing new you're giving me that I need.
Now on the plus side, Genesis 3 products should be available at sweet low prices in the months to come -- so yeah to that! Also it has been encouraging to see many new G8 products coming out are also designed with G3 in mind. The backwards compatibility of G8 sounds like a good thing, but I haven't tested it and probably won't get around to it.
My advise or opinion is for those who are well set in the G3 world, stay there and enjoy yourself. And hopefully content designed just for G8 that we want will work with minimal difficulty on our G3 characters. There are plenty of people still living comfortably among previous generations. Luckily Daz still sells old stuff and new stuff for those generations is available on other sites.
If you are new to Daz, then I guess go ahead and see if you like Genesis 8. Chances are you will like it as much as I like Genesis 3. You'll probably have to invest as much time and money into content and plugins since content specifically designed for G8 is less than others (as is with any new gen).
That's my 2 cents. I'm curious to know how many newbies prefer G8 and how many veterans are planning to migrate to G8.
Oh and 1 other thing, if it's not too late, there is never a rush to buy a new product (for all you newbies). It will always go on sale at some point on Daz. The longer you wait, the cheaper it will be. By the time I bought Victoria 7 Pro Bundle ($135), I got it for $30. Then I got the HD add-on at half price. Don't foget to use your monthly PC coupons (if you're a Platinum member)!!!
Maybe I'm overthinking it a bit too much, but I think that the closer to realism the figures get, the differences between the generations will be harder to discern. That might be what we're running into. Once realism is closely achieved, how much more can one really improve, right? :). At least it's nice to think of that way. LOL
Laurie
So I've been having this problem too lately and wanted to know what does "clone against her" mean? I want to create a conforming cloth item for G8, except I'm not a tech savy person and Daz Studio's general lack of comprehensive, up to date tutorials (free ones) has mentally tortured me since I first launched it. So I'd like to try this suggested way, but I've no clue what it even means. Is it something too advanced?
I don't think you've gotten a response from people because they probably don't know what "clone against her" means either. I sure don't. lol
maybe referring to the g3/7 clones to g8 like Aiko 7 for Aiko 8, Mika 7 for Mika 8, and so on as well as like some are releasing clothing that fits both gen3(7) and Gen8
I think that the closer to realism the figures get, the differences between the generations will be harder to discern.
I think we're at the point where the best 3D looks like a doctored (photoshopped) picture. The final figures have so much post processing and work, the base figures are very far away from realistic.
We also assume technology is linear and things will always get better.
Or that the current tech will march forward.
Virtual Reality was big in the 80s and then went away. Now it's back and REALLY BACK.
The new TRON is Ready Player One. And video games just got dosed with VR headsets and those games are on their way.
Maybe this technology lane is reaching its ceiling....
But, you could probably make a list of all the things you want in Generation 9.
One small change in the texturing or materials system could bring HUGE differences.
