No idea about Sketchup, Blender 'scares' me, and not too familiar or comfortbale with Poser or Carrara (despite having them both!) I stil ahve the .mtl file so if you could do a dir *.jpg > jpglist.txt and let me have copy of that text file I can try my script-fu and see what image files are missing or superfluous to need.
I am trying
hopefully helps but yeah that mtl file has a pile of nonexistent unused ones by looks, I am ready to call it a day and just roughly shade the city and maybe manually texture a few buildings for closer shots
I see what you're trying to work with. Is it this one?
I tried to open the Aquatic centre (3ds file) in Blender, which works. Textures are there as well. You problem might be the conversion to OBJ.
Hacking the MTL files might then be a fix, but maybe the problem started earlier (e.g. conversion to OBJ)?
yes all the induvidual 3ds files load textured in Carrara, Poser and 3dxchange textured as well as Blender
and I am afraid the obj conversion of the FBX might be the issue, that said the hacked mtl files so far do in fact then make it look for textures
The good news is that, from what I can see, all the .jpg files referenced in the .mtl file exist in that directory listing. You do seem to have more .jpg files in that listing than are 'used' within the .mtl file if that means anything (4,726 .jpg files in total, with 3,150 refrenced in the .mtl file).
I doubt actually anything can load it fully textured truth be told
was hoping to atlas it in DAZ studio to a single large not very detailed map once was textured
this is the ACC youtube video of the model
I made one too using OSM2World thats pretty plain and blocky
I have it on shareCG
http://www.sharecg.com/v/79646/gallery/5/3D-Model/Adelaide-City-South-Australia
it's been a bit of desire of mine to render something with Adelaide as the setting (my home city)
so have tried to get some sort of 3D representation for a while, I used terrainparty to do the hills and surrounds too and one day want to render planes, spacecraft invasion and maybe zombies set in it so this is just another continuation of that dream.
then there was this one
another of my videos
It seems the blend file is a crap because texture path are completely wrong and textures are not packed into the blend file
No need to hack or trying to get a headache
Get poseray https://sites.google.com/view/poseray
Get the 2 GB archive with textures and extract the whole somewhere
Batch convert with poseray. I suggest doing that per directory
1°/ Load all 3DS file of any directory. Give an appropriate name for the multiple selection (I give the directory name ex : block1 )
2°/ export obj to the same directory as source. Uncheck all options (overwrite ..., include file path.., copy maps...)
Check by opening in DAZ
There are 184 directories. Can take some time
It could be done in one go but I'm afraid the whole thing would be too big ( just move all jpg and .3DS in one directory and batch convert)
I actually did try Poseray batch convert the first time I downloaded this model a year ago when they only had the 3ds files up.
If I recall correctly it loaded everything jumbled and was pretty useless I never looked at that site again for a year!
I still have the massive pz3 file of jumbled buildings I believe.
seeing the new complete sets inspired me to retry.
Also the individual models load out of position, hence the desire to texture the ready set up city scenes.
I don't think I ever completed it either
it prob loaded half at most
on the other hand an obj export of that Poser scene might yield me a useable mtl file so maybe worth a relook
Just for info. The complete batch of the whole city took at most 1h .
Poseray also generate an opengl preview so you can check if anything is out of position (didn't have the problem)
those buildings are on top of each other in your screenshot but I will attempt this again as like I said it may provide a functional mtl file for the complete FBX set as an obj.
it will probably take me more than an hour though and much swearing as I recall doing so using Poseray before!!!
I have located my folder of obj's mtl's and textures I batch converted with Poveray the other year and a rather messy pz3 that loads textured in DAZ studio
nothing like Adelaide and not all the buildings I might add
will see how I can go from there
update, it did texture one block in Carrara
well I created a new obj in Poseray from the latest version which was obviously updated as it includes North Adelaide and the resulting mtl file seems to work on the FBX obj export
seeing it another matter
Daz studio could not handle it and sent my PC into windows memory issues the openGL viewport maxed out my 980ti video card!!!
I loaded it into Carrara and it took an hour to load but sat at 14GB of my 18GB and my GPU largely unaffected in assembly room fortunately though not in textured mode (would not dare try that)
not all the buildings are textured by looks but maybe they do not actually all have a map
I used Carrara native render as no way is this going to work in Octane!!!
it only took 10 mins to render which is not bad considering
trying now to match up a textured terrain
are no maps in existence that match the grey buildings left so this is as far as I can go
I reduced the images to 10% to enable loading into Carrara and Octane and quite a light load as no more detail really needed close ups not good anyway
Thank you to everyone that helped, you have been wonderful

Nice job!
TY
the notepad hack idea proved harder than just swapping out a mtl file in the end as all are incomplete models it seems
it was Feburary last year I did my first Poseray conversion this one went far better though again all the buildings were out of place but at least it gave me a useable mtl file for the textures that do exist.
Tried posting on their site but nobody approves my comment, prob nobody reads it to.
Things get lost in transaltion and I am not sure there was much left (apart from, maybe, Minesweeper), that you did not have in your pipeline, so getting anything at all was a good job and no small amount of perseverance! If you need/want a file hack like adding in the line to the mtl file again you know how to contact me
Congrats.
I'm gonna add a few informations in case that would interest some people
Autodesk has a free tool called FBXconverter that could also do the conversion from fbx to obj
For blender I use BosFBX plugin for FBX as it is based on autodesk SDK and has been more reliable for opening FBX so far
maybe this is a tad foggy
it does clear though as the camera flies through the volumetric clouds
in 10 hours ani might be up on youtube
