Palm Road- What's Your Experience?

NovicaNovica Posts: 23,925

I am really stymied by this product, and wondering if it's my computer acting up. I'm thinking it is. I have a lot of this vendor's products, and this surprised me.

First, the viewport is staying really dark, even with CTRL+L, I tried with different lights, and with the Iray lights that came with it. I didn't fiddle much with that, it's probably something I am overlooking and easy to tweak. But if you get that too, then I have to wonder. My real question-

The surprise is what loads in the viewport. You get 3 load on demand (LOD's) and the one with palm trees have the fronded trees, plus floating trees, and there's no way to get a good idea of the scene. If this is due to instances, it makes creating a scene impossible for me. There's no sense of what goes where, it's just a bunch of floating and stationary trees. But the real question-

Next, I have a very, very fast computer, and talk about lag. I can't get the scene to barely move, I was trying to find the road and am stuck in a bunch of trees! Anyone else who has this, can you try it? I am sure hoping it's just my computer.

    I've often wondered what he creates these monstrosities on. I've had all kinds of trouble with the forests in the past.

    I'll have to try it again tomorrow. I've been busy rendering all day and I am going to have to be more diligent about running errands and getting Life done. But this set has me stumped. I will also try rebooting my computer and seeing if that's partly to blame.

    That is a bummer to hear. I use this bundle https://www.daz3d.com/nature-bundle-pack-1 for all my grass environment starters and they work beautifully (in IRAY) and I have several other scenes wishlisted

    I don't have palm road as I don't see too many render ideas using it, but I hope you get the issues sorted out.

    I don't  own it but did purchase secluded island and found it too memory intensive. I can't really run content on my machine by this pa. Looks cool though, but after my last purchase I'm not buying more until I get a computer upgrade.

    Same here - it wasn't Secluded Island, just a path running up a hill and surrounded by trees (I can't remember the name of it). Even with the help of the Scene Optimizer product it struggles (it's the only product I own that Scene Optimizer can't tackle without losing enough to make it look dreadful), and isn't worth the effort if I can't even add a figure to the scene. To be honest, I can't think why anyone would want to make a path going up a hill full of trees the main event of a render, and would expect it to provide the backdrop to something more interesting and consequently something that wouldn't need to use a ton of resources. Buying anything more complex (just about everything!) by this PA would be a waste of my time and money, though I agree that it all looks nice enough. Especially when it's not my machine it's strangling :)

    Yeah, secluded island was a bummer since I really wanted a tropical getaway. But the scene was quite large, and it didn't run well on my computer. After buying that one, I passed on more new releases. It does look cool though. =-)

    I love this vendor's sets but, yeah, they are memory intensive.  The first thing I have to do is set up the scene and then start turning stuff off in the scene view until I can move around easily so I can find stuff and figure out where I want my camera.  Then, I save that as a scene and, every time I want to use a set from this vendor, I use my saved scene file instead of the vendor files.  I set everything that is turned off as still visible in render and that's how I work with them.  I don't have too many and haven't had any issues with any of them being too dark.

    I do have to say that his sets aren't they ones I've had to do this with.  There have been a few other intensive sets from other vendors where I've had to go turn things off and save just to be able to move around.

    @avxp  What factory are you having problems with?  I think I have most of the factories here in the DAZ store and haven't had any issues with any of them.

    I have also had issues in the past navigating this vendor's scenes once they are loaded, however since I switched the "Display Optimization" to "Best" in Preferences->Interface, I find I can navigate them far easier.

    What machine do you have? I have an i7 with 32Gb Ram and a GTX 970 video card. For "Secluded Island" moving around is a bit sluggish but doable on my machine and an out of the box Iray render took about 20 minutes to run to completion.

    Sorry, but I don't have Palm Road to test that one.

    Like Havos says, try changing the display optimization setttings. I used to have serious problem with navigating certain large scenes, after I changed that setting there's hardly any lag at all.

    I have the product and have none of the problems you mention.  A fast computer doesn't mean much for viewport navigation since from my experience it's mostly single threaded.  RAM seems to be more important for scene navigation since once it starts paging it slows to a crawl.  I had no issues moving around even with all 3 LODs set to visible (DAZ process used about 7.2GB on my Windows machine).  Even with the default load I had no issue seeing the ground and road, none of the trees were floating.

    Hello all.

    I develop my products and make my rendering on this computer: i7 3770k, 16GB Ram, GTX 960 4Gb.

    There should be a recommendation with this product about work with the scene to become easy and simple:

    * Product Notes: Palm Road

      * First start:
        * The scene consists of LOD 1, 2 and 3. For normal work with the scene in preview - LOD 2 and 3 turn off by default. Please turn on LOD 2 and 3 before rendering, and when check the intersections with your other objects and plants of the scene.
        * In the "Scene" tab, open the "Palm Road Preload Iray" group and select the desired LOD to enable or disable. You can open the group's LOD to turn off any other objects.

      * Materials:
        * There are additional materials for Fence and Phoenix Trunk with displacement and without displacement in this pack.
        * If you install the camera not far from these objects, then you will apply the displacement for better detail.
        * Also there are two kinds of displacement for Phoenix Trunk,: displacement 2 and 3. Displacement 3 is more detailed, you should use it if the camera is nearby.
        * You should use Displacement 2 if a sharp shadow passes through the trunk in the rendering time.

      * Light:
        * If you have difficulty with the light, you can always use the light setting that comes with the scene: Palm Road -> Iray Light -> Palm Road Iray Sun-Sky Only.

    I recorded a video about how I work with these scenes in the preview of DS, too:
