    The way I use it is to make it a deep blue/black as the night sky as black doesn't  add anything to a render.

    Have you tried changing the tone mapping settings to a low light setting?

    You have to remember when you go to night time hours you are removing the light, i.e. the sun so there will be none to very little light in the scene for the camera to pick up, even with a light coloured sky.
