Strictly speaking you can rename some files. Generally speaking, if you can see it in the Content Library within DS then you can rename it.
Anything in the 'data' folder should not be touched and don't rename textures or their locations either, for the obvious reason that the figures etc won't be able to locate them.
BUT.....this might cause issues if you allow your products to automatically update. It either won't find the prouct or give you a duplicate under the original name, or something like that. I'm not sure which as I don't use install manager.

The solution is to use categories. These will create shortcuts to your content and they can be renamed and reorganised however you want and they won't affect the original files. You don't even have to use the default categories that DS sets up, you can create a whole new user set. The earlier you start on this thhe easier it will be in the long run.
There are a number of tutorials out there on how to use categories and they can explain it all much better than I can. It's easy once you get into it and it may take some work if you have a lot of content. The other advantage of categories is that you can mix DS and Poser stuff into the same area. Right now they are split into different areas but with categories (as it's just shortcuts) you can mix clothing, props or whatever, however you wish. Give them a look as they are what you are after.

Hair and clothes, for the nweer figures, should be in \People\Genesis whichever\Hair or Clothing\Product, with a Materials sub-folder for materials, if you look at the file based view (Daz Studio Formats in the Content Library pane).

That is true for the Genesis range but as they are moving from Poser one could assume they were talking about V4/M4 etc as that pretty much all resides in Runtime. That is a mess as hair is split over several folders and mats are often in another one.

True, but that is the Poser system so it wouldn't be something that was a Daz Studio (or Daz) issue.

Of course it's an issue if they are now using that content within DS, which as they've moved from Poser is a fair assumption unless they state otherwise. The content library under Poser Formats is a mess, sttuff can be found all over the place, it's nowhere near as organised as the Daz Formats library. This is exactly the problem they seem to be having, given that they mention hair and that is one of the bigger messes. The solution is to use categories, as I suggested.

  • You can move or rename any of the files found in the six Library directories to any of the other six to regroup them.  I've been doing that for years.  You cannot move anything they put in any other poser directory without breaking things, particularly textures and geometries.  You can also save them as presets and store them in D/S folders.  You can't move things directly out of runtime and into the D/S structure without saving it in D/S folders.

For example, in Poser, Hair is found under Hair, Poses, and Props.  You can move all related files under Hair.  You can also set up further directories to catagorize hair by character type, (V3, V4, etc), and anything else you want (Long, medium, short).  Props can be split between Character (if it has bones) and Props (if it doesn't), and those can be grouped in the same place.  etc.
