Promo Credits?
in The Commons
Is there a reason that vendors don't consistently credit all the items by other vendors that they show in their own promotional ads? Many times I see something that I like, whether clothing or hair props, that I want to purchase but there is no credit given, which inhibits my desire to purchase something that I might otherwise. Seems like it would work to a vendor's advantage overall in a sort of quid pro quo kind of way to give credit where credit is due.

This is a topic that has been covered in many other threads but, here goes:
1) the vendor creates their own ads and have may use all sorts of kitbashed or unavailable products. Often you will find a vendor who uses a custom character and it is not for sale.
2) the vendor uses an outside artist and may not know the source of the items used in the ad.
3) it becomes a job in itself if you have to inventory everytime you do a render; most likely, each promotional image is selected from dozens which might contain many different products from many different sources. The inventory and documentation might take longer that the creation and rendering. of the scene.
4) artist spend a lot of money to use products that are available for commercial use i.e. you pay the creator so you don't have to give credit everytime you use it.
It is nice when it happens and when you find it helpful but the tradeoff is that the vendor must budget away creation time for inventory and documentation time to give credits that will still frustrate customers a fair percentage of the time.
I don't read the forums much so am unfamilar with previous threads regarding this issue. Thank you for the very in depth response. I appreciate it.
It tends to come up several times a month, which is why you got such a detailed response.
Hi Tisket! Sometimes the vendors do mention the items they use in their promos - but if there is something in particular in a promo that you are curious about like an outfit or hair used etc. you can always ask here, just mention the promo where you saw it, maybe add a link to the item, and usually someone can help you figuring it out! -Cathy
I will do that! Thanks much for the suggestion.
Also worth mentioning, some products can't be mentioned in listings.
I've only been here about a year and a half and have seen this question come up on a regular basis, which makes me wonder whether it's worth adding it to a FAQ or making it a pinned post.
When I first started here, I began shopping at Rendo about the same time and was surprised that a much higher percentage of promo images on that site offered a list of the products used, even from competing sites such as Daz. Setting aside the differences in store policies regarding references to competing sites, one thing that I've come to appreciate about the promos here vs. elsewhere is that at Daz, there seems to be a higher percentage of promos that are extremely elaborate. Sure, there are plenty of promos at both stores that feature a single character/prop with basic HDRI lighting, but here, you can regularly see promos featuring multiple characters + hair + wardrobe + accessories/props + environments + bespoke lighting...a lot of which could include custom shaders or kitbashing or not-for-sale items. While I would love to see a detailed list of everything included in such renders (as much to build a shopping list as to appreciate the complexity involved), I better understand why it becomes quite difficult if not impossible.
As others have said, the community here is fantastic at helping identify various elements used in a promo, even when such items can only be found at other sites.
