OT: New Computers

Anybody know what all the latest desktops that I'm seeing all have the disk drive mounted vertically. When I buy a new pc, the first two things I do are 1. add a blu-ray burner and 2. add a second hard drive. But I wouldn't be able to add a blu-ray player to one of these unless I can replace the slim line drive that comes with them with a blu ray burner of the same size.

A friend of mine just bought a new pc from Dell and he said he wanted them to add a second drive to the pc. He wanted to pay extra for it, but they told me they don't sell pcs like that. So what gives?

Haven't noticed the trend. Are you seeing it with HD or SSD?

Got mine in December and it's horizontal.

Perhaps the ones you're looking at have cases where vertical facilitates airflow or makes more space available for all the monster GPUs we see nowadays.

Might be small form factor or compact PCs. That sort of thing is actually fairly common for the larger OEMs like Dell, HP, etc. Most PCs built in standard ATX form factor cases will have the traditional drive bays, with variation usually limited to horizontal drive orientation for the 3.5 " bays, and various types of toolless drive mounting options.

I just looked at the Inspiron desktops on Dell's site, and I see what you are talking about.  One notebook style optical drive only, bays for 3 HDDs, and a big opening behind the PCI-E 16x slot so you can fit a long GPU into a shallow form factor desktop.

If you want a 5.25in bay through Dell, look at the Precision line of workstations.

If I look at the PCs at Sam's Club or Best Buy, those are the only desktops that I see. These are normal size desktops. HP has one with a one inch door that runs the full lenght of the PC...top to bottom. If you open the flapper, there is a slim line vertical disk drive behind it.

@JamesJAB, I didn't notice that Dell still had a line of the familiar style desktops. I'll have to take a look.

Since the PCs are still full size, I can think of no reason for the new design.
