Daz 4.9 Beta and Daz 4.8 Together

I would like to load the Beta on my laptop as from what information I can find, I should be able to run them side by side correct?  (Just want to be absolutely, positive on this one, I know its been asked and it says it can in the FAQ's but the FAQ's mention 4.5 and I want to make sure its still correct).  Also, I would like to load it to my External Drive. Do I need to allow it to install it to my C drive and then point everything to the folders i want it to go to in my I drive or can I just load the entire program onto the External?  I have 4.8 loaded to the C drive with all of the content on the I Drive.

I don't know about installing the beta to an external drive, but you can have both the released version and a beta on one machine. (I'm doing that right now on two different computers, with v4.8 and an earlier beta on this computer, and the latest release and latest beta on the beast.)

I use DIM, and it loads the 64-bit release version, on my 64-bit windows machine, under C:\Program Files\DAZ 3D\DAZStudio4 by default. And it loads the beta under C:\Program Files\DAZ 3D\DAZStudio4 Public Build.

I'll be back in a couple minutes with some screenshots of the DIM settings...

Great thank you so much!  Its time lol.  I won't give up 4.8 but I can't use skinbuilder 3 and a couple other things on my laptop which means I can't use them on my lunch and breaks at work ( I set up stuff on my breaks and let it render while I'm at work, I have the best boss ever, since he is okay with this and in fact encourages me to pursue my art)

First, everything I've read states you need to use DIM to install the beta. Looking at the DIM settings for "Installation," I do not see an alternate install path for the beta, only one path for 64-bit software and another for 32-bit.

Looking at the DIM settings for "Applications," I do see the paths for all my installed applications, including the two separate paths for the released version and the beta. It may be possible to change the path for the beta in this setting window, putting it on your external drive. You could test it out, if you're willing to put in the time and possible frustration. And it may still not work.

Maybe someone from DAZ can weigh in on whether or not it will work. Or someone who has actually done so successfully might come in and give step-by-step instructions...

Wonderful thank you!  I install everything via DIM anyway so that's not a problem.  I can install it to C and just move the content folder (which is what sucks up all my memory lol) to the I drive like I did with the 4.8.  I might go ahead and give it a go on installing it to there anyway.  My DIM is set to install everything to the I drive I wonder if I just let it run if it will automatically just do it lol.  I think I will give it a try. Thanks again!

If you have room on your laptop, you can just install the beta there via DIM. Be aware that the beta and the release versions use separate areas to save things like temporary files, layouts, styles, etc. If you have scripts set up as custom actions, (available from the "scripts" menu across the top,) you will have to set those up again.

You're welcome. In the beta, just go into the options for content management, and make sure the beta points to the same directories as the released version. There will be another directory for Connect content in the beta, that you don't have with 4.8; And for the record, I've never had a content issue using both versions on the same machine.

I think you'll discover you use 4.9 most of the time, once you get used to it. There are updates to both Iray and 3delight in 4.9, making both render engines a bit faster.

I use 4.9 on my PC and am happy with it except for the fact that it no longer has the blue bars for new content. I have so much content its very difficult to find my new content especially if its older content that is in the Poser Directory.  I keep 4.8 specifically because it make categorizing my content much much faster. I load it to the 4.8 first, then the 4.9 and follow the blue bars and do both at the same time lol. I hate Smart Content so I use DIM for everything. If it wasn't for the difficulty in finding my content I would have switched both to 4.9 6 months or more ago.

    Ah.

I need to make time to check it out, but I couldn't get Genesis Generation X2 to work on generation 4 figures in the 4.9 beta, so I keep a copy of 4.8 on this machine. (That was several beta releases ago, and it probably works exactly as it is supposed to with the latest release, but I have been dealing with more pressing stuff, like doing my tax returns, for example, and haven't tested it...)

It also comes in handy when something works differently between 4.8 and 4.9, like Centaur 7... I always found the blue bars for new content distracting, so I don't miss it all. The more content I have, the more dependent I am on search, both in the content Library and Smart Content. And I have a text list of everything I bought, separated into categories that make sense to me. One of these days, I'll have to either enter those into a spreadsheet or my own database. It is really cumbersome now, but it is nice to go to the Iray list, for example, and be able to see everything I own that is Iray specific, regardless of whether or not "iray" is in the product name...

    Taxes suck lol.

Its interesting to me how different people make things work.  I love seeing how other people organize stuff.  It might not work for me and and my way may not work for someone else but its just fun to see how different things work.  I categorize inside Studio so I only have to find it once, when its in the category I know exactly where to look.

So, separate folder in I drive kind of works but it doesn't *see* all of the content, only some of it.  Interestingly enough, it picked up my entire category structure (which is huge,) although it wasn't populated. So I deleted and now I am trying the folder that my content is in.  If that doesn't work I will just load it to the C drive lol.
