Opinions: Camera Presets for models

ScavengerScavenger Posts: 2,674

Another question that I'm sure has no bearing on any plans or plots or ponderings......

Do you like camera presets that come with models?

If so, do you use them?

If so, do you prefer individually loading ones or ones that load all together to toggle around the different cameras.

Yes, if the product is architecture or an environment I like to have camera presets for interesting vantage points.  I prefer they load all together.

Nope don't really like them, don't use them exceept for ver rarely, if I do I much prefer a single load as it would just be one I would need - perhaps for some difficult to reach angle on a large set.

And I really hate it if they are locked or replace any cameras already in the scene.

    I make my own.

    Almost never use them, but...

     - in large scenes they can be handy for finding all of the interesting bits.

     - if im troubleshooting, and see want to see if I can reproduce what the artist set up; that way I know it's something I'm doing and not another issue.

  • I do like them for environments especially for large ones.  I feel they can give a great starting point where otherwise you could spend hours looking for a view you want to use.

I've never used them, so I can't say, if I like them or not.

    Same here.

Now the subject is up, what's the difference between Copy Active View and Apply Active Viewport Transforms when you create a new camera?

I use them when I'm first investigating a new environment and sometimes I find a camera preset that I like and will use.  Mostly, though, I use my own unless it has an atmospheric camera of some sort and then I'll use that.  It just depends on the product and what I end up doing with it.  I like having the option of having them included.  What I don't like is when the vendor sets the cameras up so that they automatically overwrite the one existing in the scene.  I picked up at least one environment recently that had like 12 camera presets, but you could only load one camera at a time.  I've had a few light sets that do that, too.  I do NOT like that.  If I want to have more than one camera in a scene I should be able to merge that in and not have it take over and delete anything else I have in the scene.

I just recently started using them and have found that I like them alot.  As others have said they can be useful expecially in large sets.  Don't particularly care for when they remove the cameras I have set to load with all my scenes.

To my knowledge, replacing cameras in the scene is how Daz works. if you Ctrl/Cmd click the preset, you can add i.

Yes, but if you tell it to merge, shouldn't it merge the camera into the scene?  It works with scene subsets.  Is it different for cameras and lights?  I don't always remember to use the ctrl key when doing something like trying to add a camera preset.

I don't use them especially the fish eye type which distort perspective dramatically which seemed to be frequently included with architecture.

Subsets merge by nature..that's how they work.  you can merge full scenes for the same result. Cameras, if you ctril/cmd, it gives you an popup window

I always welcome them, especially for big scenes, like those outdoor ones with lots of instanced transmapped vegetation, where it can be almost impossible to navigate the viewport. For those sets where the places of interest aren't at the world centre, I'd also love to have simple go-to poses to place a character where the action is. Just as a starting point, then I can set up my own cameras/ poses from there. I'm nit bothered whether they load separate or as a preload.

    Hmm.. go to poses....interesting thought....
