i13-dorm-interior - optimized for iray
in The Commons
What a fantastic room! Don't dare to purchase since it's "optimized" for Iray. If I only knew if it would work with 3Delight also. Eventually I would have to apply some textures manually? What does "optimized" mean exactly? Better or exclusively?

I tried a test render in 3Ddelight and most of it was okay, but the floor was all white, and the posters on the wall were washed out.
Looks like it's Iray only, but it could because i used the included lights.
From what I can tell, "optimized" for Iray means that only Iray material presets are included, and use in 3DL will require some work on the customer's part.
Now, if you use the omnifreaker ubersurface (or HSS) - which is included with Daz Studio - most of the surfaces should translate reasonably well. The only thing that doesn't translate at all is cutout to Opacity.
Note, I don't have this particular set yet, but that's been my experience in using things optimized for Iray in 3DL. (other things, like the specialty shaders used by Terradome 3, don't convert well either, but there are actually more specialty shaders for 3DL than Iray at the moment.)
I don't understand why people are so afraid to tweak stuff; I guess many are spoiled by the existence of presets in everything these days.
I actually put it to lack of documentation combined with a fear that they don't know how reversable whatever they're doing is. At least when I started there was a manual I could download, even if it was a version or three out of date at the time.
It's a chicken or egg situation, as most people who get into DAZ/Poser do it because it's an easy way to get into 3D without having a lot of advance knowledge. For a lot of folks that "plug and play" ability is all that they need 99.8% of the time, and prior to the introduction of Iray, they could usually assume that anything bought on the site would work okay if you used DS. So, now that we have the 3DL/Iray split, a lot of folks are suddenly being faced with having to learn the actual technical aspects for the first time. That's certainly how it was for me back when I first started switching between Poser and DAZ Studio and found that things that worked in one needed a lot of tweaking in the other and sometimes simply wouldn't work at all. I eventually figured it all out, and once I discovered how to adjust textures and use shaders I started kit-bashing like crazy. But... since I barely use Poser anymore, there are some Poser only vendors that I simply don't buy from because they seem too reliant on materials or formats that don't work in DS. A lot of their product would probably work just fine, but there are always the times when they don't, so I can certainly understand someone being hesitant to buy a product where the vendor has specifically only supported one renderer without doing a lot of advance research.
Word.
Lack of a manual sounds about right. I learned how to use DAZ through dozens of Youtube videos. And even then I am just barely past the point a spotlight and render stage. Even now I still have trouble with HDR lighting.
Funny enough, Daz Studio had a manual up to version 3. But I never read it
+1
There is a free Iray to 3dl convertion script thats will do a really decent job of converting iray to 3dl that timmins.william and sriesch put together
I try to only buy items with both render engines, only for the reason I like to create animation with daz, 3dl to me is much easier to use, faster rendering, less resource intensive for animation than Iray is. and converting iray only items to 3dl for animation use is a real pain in the butt. so this script has saved me a ton of time in scene building with items that are iray only
Wouldn't like to purchase a room filled with so many objects and would have to coat them all.
Raven449 encouraged me to purchase the i13dorm-interior - and finally the special offer made it irresistable to do.
Here is what all lacked a fine surface when rendering unchanged with 3Delight. My results are a bit different from his.
I hoped I would be able to take use of the 'iray to 3delight' link but I have no idea what to do with the downloaded file. Regrettably it came without a readme.
After all it's time-consuming but interesting to experiment with individual shaders. And I'm not soo afraid of Iray-optimized products anymore ...
There's also the effort involved in converting everything -- I would love to get Faveral's MICK sets, but converting hundreds of items is time consuming. And you don't always know from looking at a product whether you'll be able to get the desired look in another render engine. I've bought one or two Iray-only products that were exactly what I was looking for, but other than that I avoid them. I dont have a lot of time for producting artwork, so a product that works out of the box is worth more to me, even if I then tweak it.
That's it! It's always a kind of gamble. You never know how many items in the scene will lack the shaders. It would help to talk about our experiences with certain Iray-optimized products. Or what would be even better: to contact the creator. Renderosity for example adds these options to the products: Editorial, reviews ... and messaging. Often helpful.
I've gotten a few iRay scene sets but haven't tried them out yet because of the trouble I've had with stuff that has both iRay and 3DL materials but loads up iRay and then I apply the 3DL materials and something is wrong. It may look fine rendered, but the render takes 20 to 30 times longer because of some zone somewhere that didn't convert. I don't know what it is exactly and it's frustrating.
