T-shirt and shorts shouldn't be that hard

Let me start by apologizing for the sarcasm and frustration that is bound to come through, because this post summarizes a couple of things that have heckled me since I started with Daz at Gen4: 1, if you want to outfit a space siren, a medieval peasant, an elf, an MMA warrior, or a teenager out to score, it's easy to find clothing, but if you're looking for something that people actually wear, like what you see on folks walking down the street, it's a bit tougher, and 2, even if Daz has what you're looking for, it can be virtually impossible to find it. I think their search returns what they most want to sell, not what you most want to buy. There are hundreds of products that never seem to come up on the search.

But on to the point. I've been trying for three or four days to get a fifth-grader into shorts and a T-shirt. Should be easy? Not so. I've prepared an image of biologically-sourced children surfaced by Google to demonstrate my point: http://imgur.com/a/cS6uj . Notice all the locations I have marked "Space", where there is visible distance between skin and fabric, unlike the Daz Spandex spray-on look of most clothing. Granted, the spray-on look is easier to do as you don't have to worry about dynamics, but at the same time, you don't really need clothing for that; you can do it by texturing the base mesh. I want some clothes with ROOM.  I've spent those three days hunting and experimenting, and have achieved some success creating morphs for Sam Shorts in Blender, and some by using D-Formers, which are horribly awkward if you're used to real mesh tools.  It seems like there should be an easier way.  Am I missing something obvious?  Some package titled "Real Clothing", for example? As I mentioned in paragraph 1, this has been a source of frustration now for YEARS. I'm using G2M/F.

Thanks.

You could use a Push Modifier, with a weight map via Create>New Push Modifier Weight Node, to create a selective stand-off. DForms can also be weight-mapped.

  • scorpio: That's a start! I think I have some K4 clothes I can try to fit to G2 as an experiment.
Richard: I don't know how I missed that Push Modifier, but then, there is actually so much in DS it's hard to discover it all.  I'd thought of playing with geometry shells, but that looks easier. Time to finally figure out those weight maps.

    Thanks for the help.

You could try the G3 lifeguard sets, they autofit quite well to G2. Here's with Zevo's growing up 10 years.

There's also the Ushirt, it has a lot of morphs:

  • Taozen: thanks for the lifeguard link. I sprang for the female version, as it solves a couple of other issues nicely. The character I've been struggling with is actually a girl, but she hides it well.

Wilmap: Yes, I know your site. It is one of the great, never-to-be-sufficiently-praised DAZ resources on the Internet.

  • While testing to see if K4 clothes would fit to G2, I discovered something I hadn't noticed before. I found morphs for the K4 boxers that could be useful, but when I fit them to my figure, the morph sliders disappeared. There are a number of ways to implement autofit, and if they do it by modifying the clothing geometry to match the new mesh, it makes some sense that the morphs wouldn't work anymore.  But....  I observed the same thing fitting the lifeguard female trunks to G2F, but the morph sliders wouldn't necessarily disappear right away. They would eventually, such as if I selected another object, but for a while I sometimes had access to them. Does anyone really understand what's happening here under the hood? Fat chance getting one's hands on the source code.  Regardless, it looks like I'll still be having to make morphs in Blender.

YOu can use the Optitex dynamic cloth with any character.  IF you cannot get it to fit by using the X & Y shrink option then you can simply scale up the character (and everything else in the scene) to make the clothes fit

If you are doing this in Daz Studio only, you may find it easier to work with Genesis figures since they are better designed then the generation 4 line

AutoDFit should preserve morphs, as long as they are actual morphs and not controls driving one or more transforms on bones that are lost in the fitting (that is, bones that don't occur in the figure being fitted to).
