Underwater Scenes?

For anyone doing underwater scenes, what are you using for backdrops, or how are you lighting it to get the appearance of the deep sea.  Anyone know of any tutorials?

I would use a water image downloaded from morguefile as a backdrop and use kelp and plants to fill up the scene and do most of it postwork. There are several water cameras available in the store that can make the tone and volume look good for the water depth. I would then postwork bubbles and such to make it look like the character is expelling air.

This sort of thing? I used elements of the Neptune's garden sets and a caustics plane with a spot light for the err underwatery pattern on the floor, also AtmoCam.

That is very nice. Care to explain further on setting up the scene, such as what is a caustics plane, where does the spot light go and settings for Atmocam

I find I get good results layering with transparency.  I rendered the scene several times with more and more elements in the background turned off.  I then composited the image back to front, with varying transparency in each layer.  The small attachment shows the layers.  The large attachment is the final image.

I am thinking of underwater scenes myself...

I would set up a overhead plane (outside of the cameras eye) with Opacity pattern as a filter for a light source overheard. It would be a faux Caustic pattern, designed to look like the Caustic pattern of light through waves.

The point is to give the impression of water.

Layering and compositing would also be an obvious and powerful tool. I don't want the fore and background to necessarily render with particulate matter in the water, but I'd want to give that look of the ocean.

Thanks for the info. ideally I don't want to do any postwork and want the renderer to do all the work

If you are using Iray, turn on the caustic sampler in the Render Settings. Create a water plane, place a light overhead and use a fog camera.

Thanks Everyone!   Those are all great ideas to help me get started!

The caustics plane is literally a plane with a black and white caustic pattern imagine used in the opacity. I use a single spotlight set quite high up casting a wide beam through the plane. I'll have to check the settings I used on atmocam whoch I will do if this render I'm cooking EVER finishes!!!

I think with the last update of DS water and SSS are true volumes now, aren't they? Have you tried a cube and used a water material? I haven't tried with water yet, but I know it's working with a cube and SSS for things like godrays and the effect of dust in a room being illuminated by light thru a window. The attached (still in the process of rendering) is just a cube with an SSS material with the room and props and camera inside it and light coming thru the window.
