Question on light probes, etc.

What are the differences between Light Probes, eg. "Light Probe HDR Lighting for Iray," and something like this, "iRadiance - HDRI Variety Pack" ?
Thanks.

The variety pack does provide you with HDR images of an environments. It is useful for lighting, but also provides a realistic background (like a beach or a forest, though they only work with the figures near the center of the scene). On the other hand, the light probes are just a gradation of colors that provide HDRI lighting but, while useful as somehow neutral backgrounds and sources of interesting reflections, could hardly be confused for a beach.
Yeah, the variety pack has actual environment HDRI to have your figure render in. The Light Probes area all different colored lights which work great for lighting just by itself in some cases although I do tend to mix them with other lighting, too. I have my favorite medium-light with a slightly gray color for the background set as my default light instead of the default HDRI in the default scene that I created to load into DS. It gives a nice lightly setup that I don't have to think about for test renders. The base product has mostly single color lighting and the other two products give you a variety of multi-colored lighting. I love playing with them because you can get some really cool effects with them. You can also move the dome rotation to change the lighting on each one for even more variety. They are both great products and it would probably depend on what you want to do as to which one you should get. I have both and I admit I get much more mileage out of the Light Probes as I use one of them as my default HDRI. But, I play with those lights a lot. Quite a few of my renders use them.
